When Is the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series Coming to Disney+?
Beauty and the Beast fans have a new look at this dynamic duo. Thanks to Disney’s streaming platform, there’s an original series in the works, starring LeFou and Gaston. When does this original television show debut on Disney+? Here’s what we know about LeFou and Gaston prequel.
Disney+ is creating a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ related series
It’s a tale as old as time and in 2017, Disney gave Beauty and the Beast a live-action adaptation. Now, an extended version of their story is coming to Disney+, as a prequel series exclusive to subscribers.
Disney already has a slew of original television shows available on its streaming platform. That includes the Disney Channel-based High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and The Mandalorian. Additionally, this isn’t the first Beauty and the Beast spinoff created by Disney. (Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas is also on Disney+.)
This spinoff will feature characters LeFou and Gaston from the live-action adaptation
As much as we’d love to head back to the enchanted castle with Belle and the Beast, this story follows the unlikely pair of Gaston and LeFou. The series stars the same actors from the live-action adaptation, Luke Evans and Josh Gad respectively, and is written by Once Upon a Time’s Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Sources say the Beauty and the Beast prequel stemmed from Kitsis and Horowitz’s time working with Gad on the scrapped Muppets Live Another Day comedy series that was in the works for months at Disney+… Conversations about the untitled Beauty and the Beast prequel began shortly after the trio decided to depart Muppets,” the article continues.
The live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast also features one of Disney’s first openly LGBTQ characters, LeFou. Presumably, this series will detail more of LeFou’s experience before stumbling into the enchanted castle. However, nothing has been confirmed by the studio.
This is not the first spinoff announced by Disney. There’s reportedly a television show based on the live-action Aladdin in the works, starring Billy Magnussen as the dimwitted yet endearing Prince Anders. There’s no word regarding when, or if this spinoff will debut, especially because of the criticism it received from fans.
When does the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ series debut on Disney+
There’s no official premiere date for this spinoff series. Production already began on Disney+ television shows like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and The Mandalorian, which are set for their debut during Fall 2020.
Additionally, production since halted for upcoming series’ for multiple streaming platforms, including HBO’s Euphoria, due to the surge in coronavirus cases. Presumably, that means the Beauty and the Beast spinoff will not debut until at least winter 2020. More information will be announced in the coming months.
In the meantime, fans can binge-watch the original Beauty and the Beast and the live-action adaptation on Disney’s streaming platform. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
