Before Falling for John Travolta, Kelly Preston Dated These Other Hollywood Actors
The news of Kelly Preston’s death on July 12 shocked fans, and tributes continue to pour in for the actor who passed away following a battle with breast cancer.
Preston’s husband John Travolta made the announcement on Instagram, thanking her medical team and friends for the care and support they provided.
Preston and Travolta’s marriage is considered one of Hollywood’s most enduring after nearly 30 years together. The two weathered addiction, career highs and lows, and the tragic loss of their son Jett. But prior to marrying the love of her life, Preston was romantically connected to a few other well-known actors in show business.
Kelly Preston and John Travolta married in the ‘90s
Preston and Travolta met on the set of The Experts, a 1989 film which had Preston performing a screen test with her future husband. At the time, Preston was with someone else, but she felt an immediate connection with Travolta.
They originally planned on a large, lavish wedding ceremony, but wound up eloping in Paris. They married in September 1991.
In this video with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, Preston discussed how the extravagant wedding plans led to their decision to elope. She also said they had to make their union legal when they returned to the U.S.
The couple spoke to Closer Weekly in 2017 about the longevity of their relationship, with Travolta stating, “We really care deeply about each other and we protect each other — and we keep [our relationship] up to date.”
George Clooney was an old beau
Before marrying Travolta, Preston dated one of America’s most famous leading men, George Clooney. The two started dating in 1987 after meeting at an industry party.
In a 1989 interview with People, Preston and Clooney talked about their relationship, and fans learned he won her over by giving her a ride on his Harley.
The two bought a house together, and Clooney famously gifted Preston a pet pig named Max for her birthday. After they split, he kept the pig until its death in 2006.
Kevin Gage was her first husband
Preston was married to Kevin Gage from 1985 to 1987, and at times, she spoke on how they weren’t right for each other. The pair co-starred in 1986’s SpaceCamp together.
Charlie Sheen and Kelly Preston were engaged
Charlie Sheen is no stranger to the spotlight, but how many knew of his relationship with Preston? Things were so serious between them that they got engaged in 1990. They broke up after he allegedly shot her by accident.
While Sheen implied she shot herself, Preston later contradicted that story but admitted it was a mistake. Sheen left a pistol in his pants pocket and after dropping the empty pair on the floor, the gun went off, striking Preston.
Preston suffered a flesh wound and shortly after the incident, she called off their engagement and Sheen entered a rehab facility.
Though Preston had been in love a few times, no one compared to Travolta. She always gushed about him in interviews and called him one of the kindest people you’d ever meet.
She also talked about how often they still danced together — with and without their kids. As Travolta and their children mourn their loss, they’re honoring Preston’s courage and unconditional love.
