The TV show Being Erica aired on the CBC network from 2009-2011. It starred Erin Karpluk (Anna Benoit in A Million Little Things) as Erica, a woman whose life was a chaotic mess. When she seeks the help of a therapist to work on her issues, she finds Dr. Tom—a therapist that doesn’t take care of his patients the traditional way. Instead, he sends them back to specific moments in time to see if changing the past can change the future.

Although this show was popular with Canadian audiences, it only ran for four seasons. Now that Being Erica is streaming on platforms such as Hulu and Amazon Prime, it found many more fans around the globe, giving rise to a potential American adaptation.

According to Jana Sinyor, season 4 was a ‘natural end’ to ‘Being Erica’

Fans of Being Erica have mixed feelings about the show’s end. Although the end of season 4 provided a natural ending to Erica’s story for most fans, some were still craving more. However, according to an article on Insider, series creator Jana Sinyor knew season four would likely be the show’s last.

Being Erica Season 4 ended with Erica finally becoming a therapist herself. As Dr. Erica prepared to take on her first patient, she had to say goodbye to Dr. Tom, who led her through her journey over the past four years. Although a relatively happy ending for a show, some of Erica’s more challenging moments were glossed over in the finale, leaving some fans to wonder whether further resolution was on the table.

The show accumulated fans throughout its run. However, Being Erica decreased its episode count with each season, finally ending with its fourth season, where much of Erica’s story is wrapped up nicely for fans. There was some hope that there would be more original episodes. But the hope for fans faded as the months and years went on.

Although it has been many years since the show’s original run, Being Erica has seen new life on streaming services. It is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime, giving life to new fans who enjoy the show as much as its Canadian fans.

An adaptation of the series may now be in development

The proposal for an American adaptation of Being Erica arose long ago. Variety reported ABC was planning one back in 2010. A decade later, the possibility sparked more intrigue. In 2020, Deadline shared the news of a “loose adaptation.”

From executive producer Allison Williams, the show instead focuses on two women who, like Erica, go back in time with the help of a unique brand of therapy.

“I was a huge fan of the original series and I jumped at the opportunity to get involved to help give it a new life,” the Girls star explained. “I constantly find myself thinking: ‘if I could go back, what would I do differently?’ I’m really eager to push that familiar thought experiment to its limits.”
