Ben Affleck Felt a Strange Sense of Peace Breaking up With Jennifer Lopez for the First Time

Breaking up is never an easy thing to do, and Affleck and Lopez took their own separation particularly rough. Lopez has been very candid about how devastating losing Affleck was for her the first time. A couple of years ago, the singer confided that it was something she didn’t think she’d survive.
“It was so painful after we broke up. Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, I was — it was the biggest heartbreak of my life. I honestly felt like I was going to die,” Lopez recalled in an interview with Zane Lowe. “It sent me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right.”
Lopez experienced quite a few relationship break-ups before Affleck. But she asserted that this was the first break-up that led to real heartache it took some time to recover from.
“It was probably my first big heartbreak, and to have one of my best friends who I’d known for years, who I actually love and did have chemistry with, come into my life and say, ‘I’m here’…What you need to know is, nobody can save you or heal you,” she said in a separate interview with Today. “Only you can do that for you.”
Affleck experienced similar emotional symptoms of heartache. But after the discomfort passed, the Gone Girl star was able to bounce back.
“It’s the sort of vague calm you get after vomiting where the vomit itself is rather unpleasant, but when it’s over it does bring you a kind of strange peace,” Affleck once told UPI.
How is Jennifer Lopez taking her second break-up from Ben Affleck compared to her first?
It’s hard to tell what may be going through anyone’s mind. But some sources indicate that Lopez might be taking her second break up with Affleck slightly better than her first. The two went much further in the 2020s than they did in the 2000s, even getting married after just one year of dating again. Rumors of their marital troubles gained momentum in early 2024. By August of that same year, the two were divorced.
Sources explained to People that Lopez was as hurt and disappointed as most would be after a divorce. But it seems Lopez hasn’t had the same emotional breakdown that she did a couple of decades ago. One source even claimed to the publication that she was relieved after breaking away from Affleck for good.
“She didn’t want a divorce. She wanted to figure things out,” the source said.
In a social media post, Lopez seemed to hint that she was more than at peace with her decision. On an Instagram post, she displayed a t-shirt with a very deliberate-seeming message.
“She’s in bloom and unbothered out of reach and at peace,” the t-shirt read according to Glamour.

Perhaps what made her break up with Affleck particularly disappointing was Lopez’s expectations. She felt strongly that Affleck was the one. It was a fairytale reunion that she doubted anyone could’ve predicted.
“But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most would-never-happen-in-Hollywood ending. ‘That would never happen. We’re not going to write that because nobody would believe it’ ending,” she said.
