Ben Affleck Left Jennifer Garner in Tears After Revealing Intimate Details of Their Marriage in Off-the-Rails Oscar Speech
Ben Affleck was nominated for the feature film Argo at the 2013 Oscars. With wife Jennifer Garner on his arm, the actor was snubbed for best director and actor nominations but walked away with the biggest coup of the night, Best Picture. During his speech, Affleck left Jennifer Garner in tears during a cringeworthy Oscar speech where he revealed intimate details of their marriage.

In 2013, Ben Affleck was honored for his work on the feature film Argo. The motion picture was based on events that took place during the 1979–81 Iran hostage crisis.
The film was honored across the board by the BAFTA’s, the Golden Globes, the Director’s Guild of America, the SAG Awards, and the American Film Institute Awards, to name a few of its accolades. However, on this night, Affleck reportedly hoped to score his second golden statuette since 1998. Affleck and Matt Damon won Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
After Argo was announced for the night’s most prestigious award, Best Picture, Affleck took the stage with the film’s producers and stars. Jennifer Garner beamed at her husband‘s achievement from the audience.
Then, Affleck went off the rails. After acknowledging the other films nominated, Affleck thanked his parents, brother, and Tony Mendez, who allowed Affleck to tell his story.
It was then that he addressed a teary Garner: “I want to thank my wife, whom I don’t usually associate with Iran. I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It’s good. It is work, but it’s the best kind of work, and there’s no one I’d rather work with.”
2 years later, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their split
Days after their 10th wedding anniversary, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner revealed they were getting a divorce in June 2015. The couple shared a joint statement on the matter, as printed by ABC News.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the couple wrote. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”
Affleck and Garner filed nearly two years after announcing their split in June 2015. However, they continue to co-parent their children, ensuring they were always put first ahead of any problems they had in their marriage.
A decade after splitting, the couple puts their kids first
Ben Affleck told People Magazine that he and Jennifer Garner would always be connected due to the family they created. Therefore, they would continue to show one another respect to ensure their three children‘s stability.
“When you have children with somebody, you’re connected to them forever,” he said. “And I’m very lucky she is the mother of my children. I’m very grateful and respectful of her. Our marriage didn’t work, and that’s difficult. Both of us believe that it’s important for kids to see their parents respect one another and get along, whether they’re together or not.”
On August 20, 2024, Affleck and Garner experienced another milestone as parents. They traveled to New Haven, Connecticut, to drop their daughter Violet off at Yale University, where she’s entering the school as a freshman.
Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on Aug. 20, 2024. Jennifer Garner is reportedly in a long-term relationship with John Miller.
