Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s Amicable Divorce ‘Out the Window,’ Finalization Nowhere Close, Source Says
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez couldn’t make their marriage work after two years. Lopez served Affleck divorce papers in August 2024, upsetting Bennifer fans everywhere. Now, Affleck and Lopez are working through finalizing their split as the end of the year approaches. Unfortunately, a source says that finalization is nowhere in sight. And the exes threw their amicable attitude “out the window.”
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are nowhere close to ‘finalizing the divorce,’ a source says
Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on Aug. 20, 2024. By this time, several sources close to the couple warned that Lopez and Affleck were headed for a split. The exes have seemed to remain amicable as they work through the divorce. However, their lack of a prenup complicates dividing assets.
“They had no prenup, which complicates things, and what’s at stake are the assets they acquired together during their marriage — the $60 million house they’ve listed for $68 million and the production company Artists Equity Ben formed with Matt Damon two years ago, which Jennifer also has a stake in,” a source told In Touch Weekly in October 2024.
Another source told In Touch Weekly in December 2024 that “nothing has been resolved” in the divorce.
“It’s been six months since she filed and nothing has been resolved; it doesn’t seem like they’re anywhere close to finalizing the divorce,” the source alleged. “They both said they wanted to do it amicably and have even talked a good game about wanting to consciously uncouple, but that plan seems to be out the window because they can’t agree on how to divide things up, which of course is affecting things.”
The insider added that Lopez thinks Affleck should “give in” to her demands. And it “infuriates” Lopez that Affleck is “trying to come out of this on top.” However, Affleck feels he’s been “more than fair” in the proceedings. “And J.Lo is the one purposely dragging this on and nitpicking over little details.”
Jennifer Lopez allegedly feels ‘disgusted’ that Ben Affleck would take any of her earnings
While Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck appear amicable on the outside, their divorce talks might get spicy. Another source told In Touch Weekly in September 2024 that Lopez doesn’t want to write Affleck “a massive check.”
“She already feels so screwed over by Ben,” the source alleged. “Writing him a massive check is just the final insult, and it’s not something she’s going to just hand over.”
Because of the couple’s lack of a prenup, they might each get a 50/50 stake in everything earned during their two years of marriage.
“It’s become very clear now that there’s no getting out of paying Ben half of what she made during their marriage, which is obviously not sitting well with her,” the source continued. They added that Lopez feels “disgusted” at the thought of Affleck taking the money she earned, especially after his broken promises. “It really proves he’s not the man she thought he was,” the source said.
A divorce attorney said J.Lo likely won’t request half of her ex’s assets
Despite what outside sources say, divorce attorney Jacqueline Newman from the matrimonial law firm Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein LLP in Manhattan said Jennifer Lopez isn’t likely to request half of Ben Affleck’s assets.
“I do not think that Jennifer Lopez is really requesting half of Ben Affleck’s assets,” Newman shared in a statement to Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
Newman noted that the couple “undoubtedly” had a prenup, which would protect their assets. However, it appears Affleck and Lopez tied the knot without one.
“The issue seems to be a request by Lopez for reimbursement of expenses paid during the marriage, as she states that Affleck did not pay his fair share,” Newman stated. “Whether that is an issue to fight about, it could depend on what their prenuptial agreement says.”
