Ben Affleck has worked with many stars both as an actor himself and a director. But there was one fairly recent breakout star who he was more than impressed by.

Affleck starred in the Hulu feature Deep Water in 2022. The movie was a thriller about a husband who’d get caught up in a mysterious crime after his wife’s affairs. One of the actors who Affleck worked with for the first time was Ana de Armas, who played his wife in the picture. De Armas was already building a notable portfolio with films like Blade Runner and Knives Out. But working with her so closely and personally made Affleck realize just how good she was.

“The first time we read the scenes together, it became pretty clear she was going to do something exceptional with a very complex role,” Affleck told Vogue (via People) about de Armas. “Her character is the engine of the story and requires her to move between tragedy and irony or between realism and the most absurd comedy.”

To Affleck, de Armas was able to knock her role out of the park effortlessly.

“Not only does she know how to do it with ease, she also manages to surprise you in every shot. Her talent is infinite,” he said about the actor.

Why Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas Broke up

Affleck and de Armas seemed to get to know each other quite well on the set of Deep Water. Although the feature wasn’t released until 2022, it was filmed in 2019. By 2020, Us Weekly reported that the pair were dating.

“Ben and Ana basically live together and Ben is very into Ana and so sweet to her,” a source once told the publication about their relationship. “They are like any couple and sometimes she picks dumb and immature fights with him, but he doesn’t get flustered and they’re never about big issues [or] dealbreakers for either of them.”

The anonymous source further confided that Affleck was already gushing about de Amas to others despite them having not dated too long.

“Ben is very supportive of Ana and tells her how amazing she is,” the insider added.. “Ana’s friends are constantly telling her how lucky she is to have Ben and think he is so charming, cool and fun. They’re so happy for her.”

Even his ex-wife Garner was happy to see Affleck move on with his Deep Water co-star. But their relationship didn’t last long, as it was announced the two split on January, 2021.

She broke it off. Their relationship was complicated,” a source once told People. “Ana doesn’t want to be Los Angeles based and Ben obviously has to since his kids live in Los Angeles.”

Another source claimed to the publication that the break-up was mutual, however. And judging by their lifestyles, it seems that the relationship might not have been designed to last from the very beginning.

“They are in different points in their lives; there is deep love and respect there. Ben continues to want to work on himself. He has three jobs lined up and he’s a solid father at home. They are both happy with where they are in their lives,” another source said.

It seems there may have been a lot of truth in what the sources claimed about the couple’s break-up. De Armas had more attention on her than she bargained for after being with Affleck. And although Affleck might’ve been used to it, it was a lot more than de Armas bargained for. When Elle asked her what she felt about the gossip surrounding their relationship, she put her feelings into one simple word.

“Horrible,” she said.

“That’s one of the reasons why I left L.A.,” de Armas added.

Going a little deeper into her time in Los Angeles, she felt the city, as a whole, constantly left her feeling anxious.

“Going through it [myself] confirmed my thoughts about, ‘This is not the place for me to be,’” she said. “It became a little bit too much. There’s no escape. There’s no way out.”
