Besties Alicia Keys and Serena Williams Serve Up Style Goals at the U.S. Open
The U.S. Open is always starstudded, but the stands were especially full of high-profile spectators on Day 7. Besties Alicia Keys and Serena Williams stole the show as they enthusiastically cheered for Grigor Dimitrov during his tense match against Andrey Rublev. The ninth-seeded Dimitrov eventually won, earning a spot in his first US Open quarter-final since 2019.
Williams and Keys sat together in box seats, cheering on the former world No. 3. The last time Williams appeared at Flushing Meadows, she competed against Ajla Tomljanović, who beat her in the third round. The six-time U.S. Open champion announced her retirement shortly afterward. She did not return to watch the competition in 2023. Naturally, fans were ecstatic to see Williams back for the Grand Slam tournament.
Keys and Williams, 43 and 42, respectively, have been friends for decades. Keys paid tribute to her friend in 2019, telling BBC, “She is like a sister to me. I love her perspective; I love her style. I love who she is. She’s bomb.” Keys continued, “What is it like to see a beautiful Black woman like Serena making the moves that she’s making — and Venus [Williams] — in a predominantly white sport? It really shows every little girl, every little boy, every young person that there is no space where you don’t belong.”
As Keys and Williams enjoyed their reunion in New York, the “No One” singer wore a white linen button-up shirt and high-waisted denim cargo pants embellished with embroidered flowers. She accessorized with large gold hoops, tortoiseshell sunglasses, and two necklaces — one with an “Egypt” nameplate honoring her oldest biological son. Keys carried a caramel-colored handbag and matching leather heels.
Williams went all Gucci for her look. The 23-time Grand Slam champion wore a Gucci cotton polo dress in ivory and lime. She carried a Gucci Ophidia GG toiletry bag as her purse of choice, matching the pouch’s fluorescent yellow trim to her dress. Williams wore Gucci Re-Web sneakers featuring an original canvas and fluorescent green leather.
Additional stars who bore witness to the U.S. Open Day 7 included comedian Stephen Colbert, Saturday Night Live cast member Michael Che, producer Shonda Rhimes, actor Ellen Pompeo, and singer/songwriter John Mayer, who attended with his niece.
