Howard Hamlin becomes collateral damage in ‘Better Call Saul’ Season 6

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 7 kicks off with Jimmy and Kim’s hilarious scheme, but the mid-season finale ends on a much darker note.

When Howard shows up to confront the pair about what they’ve done, he comes face to face with Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton). Although Howard has no idea who Lalo is, he becomes collateral damage in the man’s vendetta against Gus (Giancarlo Esposito). Lalo’s there for his lawyers, but Howard’s presence presents a problem. He eliminates that problem with little thought, leaving Jimmy and Kim in shock as the episode closes.

While Jimmy is horrified at what happens to Howard, Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk believes it’s the makings of a good story. Here’s what he had to say about Howard’s tragic demise.

Better Call Saul fans are still reeling from the mid-season finale’s big Howard moment. And the cast spoke about the character’s death during an episode of Talking Saul that aired on AMC directly after.

Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk feels terrible for Howard, but he admitted that his fate speaks to the show’s storytelling abilities.

“I mean, this is a masterstroke of storytelling,” Odenkirk said. “There’s so much that’s great about it because of what it does to Jimmy and Kim personally. It’s just such a wrong thing to happen.”

He went on to note that Jimmy and Kim’s “plays and ploys” seem “harmless,” but they actually turn out to be “horrifying.” That’s something Better Call Saul Season 6 will likely expand on during part 2. In fact, it could even be the reason Kim isn’t around during Breaking Bad.

After Howard’s tragic fate in Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 7, fans are wondering how Jimmy and Kim’s storylines will be impacted. Ultimately, it’s their scheming that leads Howard to their apartment — and thus, to his death. It seems certain this will create friction between the two characters. That’s not to mention the internal struggles they’re sure to face because of their actions.

Speaking with The Los Angeles Times, Bob Odenkirk couldn’t say where Saul ultimately ends up. However, it doesn’t seem like he’ll have some huge redemption by the end.

“I can’t tell you where he ends up, but it’s not like he has some revelation of humanity,” Odenkirk admitted. “I think he gets to … I think I’ve said all I can say. But I like where his journey ends. And I think you’ll like it too.”

Still, things could go sideways with Kim, especially with this new pressure on their relationship. Fans will need to wait and see how it all unfolds.
