‘Better Call Saul’ Season 6: Howard Hamlin’s Greatest Moments According to Patrick Fabian
As Better Call Saul Season 6 begins, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) are plotting to take down their old boss, Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian). The audience will relish seeing smug Howard get his comeuppance, but Fabian won’t spoil what happens. Instead, he looks back at some of Howard’s greatest moments from Better Call Saul Seasons 1-5.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first five seasons of Better Call Saul.]
Fabian spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet by Zoom on April 8. Since spoilers for Better Call Saul Season 6 are pretty much off the table, we spoke instead about Howard’s highlights along the way. Better Call Saul airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on AMC and streams on AMC+. Part 2 of the final season is coming this summer.
Patrick Fabian loved when Howard Hamlin jumped the wall in ‘Better Call Saul’ Season 3
In the season 3 episode “Witness,” Howard actually gets his hands dirty. He jumps over the wall of Chuck (Michael McKean)’s house. Plus, he’s wearing his fancy business suit when he does it.
“Vince [Gilligan] directed me when Howard hops over the wall to go sneak in on the house,” Fabian said. “Being able to walk like Howard and jump up over that wall wearing that beautiful suit that Jen Bryan has designed for me, Di Stefano Italy in Downtown Los Angeles made for me, those sort of things really informed my character. I love doing it.”
The Better Call Saul crew also enjoyed pushing Howard out of his comfort zone.
“I could hear them snickering when I was doing it and as a performer that’s fun,” Fabian said.
Patrick Fabian also loves these ‘Better Call Saul’ dialogue scenes
Most of the time, Better Call Saul lets Howard talk, and season 6 is no exception. Fabian loves his scenes with co-stars, even when Howard’s on the receiving end of a dressing down.
“Every scene I had with McKean, every scene I had with Bob and Rhea,” Fabian said. “When Rhea hands me my ass a couple times, she has a couple times when she hands me my ass. I love standing next to her watching her work but part of my brain is just like what are you doing? It’s a bit of a melding of our personal lives and professional lives.”
‘Better Call Saul’ Season 6 keeps Howard Hamlin in his place
Howard is the mark in Better Call Saul Season 6 and Fabian has some great scenes coming up. However, Kim and Jimmy remain the focus. Fabian is content with that, even though his parents may disagree.
“It is called Better Call Saul as I remind my parents, “Fabian said. “It’s not called Better Call Howard. My parents, God love ‘em, they live in Pennsylvania. My dad’s 88, my mom’s 84. They’re watching the show and they call after every episode because they’re watching it live. I don’t think they operate a DVR. ‘That was nice, you looked good’ or ‘Hmm, you weren’t in that episode very much. Are you going to have any more to do next?’ I’m like mom, it’s a good job. Trust me, it really is.”
