Beyonce and Jay-Z Snuck This Drink Into Recent Award Show
The 2020 Golden Globe award show gave people plenty of unexpected moments to talk about the next day. Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue had the stars shifting uncomfortably in their seats.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt seemed like they were taking the occasion as an opportunity to get a little closer. And Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a dramatic entrance that turned many famous heads.
The stunning couple stole the show in a few different ways, but one of the bold moves wasn’t obvious at first. An eagle-eyed reporter noticed that their bodyguard seemed to be smuggling in something for them to drink. Why would this power couple bring their own bottles to a famously booze-filled evening?
Jay-Z and Beyonce made quite the entrance
Beyoncé was a nominee for an award for best original song, but the couple didn’t show up for the pre-show red carpet walk to pose for the cameras. They arrived after the show was already in full swing, causing quite a stir.
Kate McKinnon was presenting the Carol Burnett Award for outstanding contribution to television to Ellen DeGeneres when they slipped in. They were quietly standing and waiting for McKinnon to finish before going to their table when the crowd noticed them.
Beyoncé wore a fitted black gown with dramatic gold sleeves, and the striking pair drew the attention of home viewers and attendees alike. In fact, they drew so much attention that Los Angeles Times reporter Amy Kaufman noticed that their bodyguard seemed to be carrying two gleaming bottles of champagne.
What champagne did Beyonce and Jay-Z bring to the show?
The bottles of bubbly looked like Armand de Brignac, also known as Ace of Spades. Jay-Z has been a partial owner in the brand since 2014, and he promotes it heavily. He invested in the champagne because he was offended by a comment that was made in 2006 by Frederic Rouzaud, the manager of the company that produces Cristal.
Rouzaud was asked what he thought about the fact that so many rappers were fans of Cristal, and he replied: “What can we do? We can’t forbid people from buying it. I’m sure Dom Pérignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business.” Understandably, many rap artists and fans didn’t appreciate this.
Jay-Z has plenty of reason to want Ace of Spades to sell well, not only because he’s financially invested, but because his bubbly’s success is a win in his grudge against Cristal. Bringing it to such a widely televised, star-studded event is a great way to promote the — but is the Golden Globes a BYOB affair?
The Golden Globes has its own champagne
Moët & Chandon is the official champagne of the awards show. They created a signature drink, called “The Moët Golden Hour,” which includes pineapple juice and pink grapefruit vodka.
While most of the guests enjoyed this cocktail, Beyoncé and Jay-Z shared their Ace of Spades with at least one other star.
Reese Witherspoon approached their table before the evening was over, explaining that their table had run out of water. Jay-Z and Beyoncé shared their personal champagne with her, which seems to have been the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Beyoncé has since sent Witherspoon two gifts, a case of Ace of Spades, and Beyoncé’s IVY PARK x Adidas line, all in Witherspoon’s size.
It seems unlikely that since Moët & Chandon is the Golden Globes’ official champagne they would be thrilled about a guest bringing in their own, competing brand of bubbly, or that they’d want it shared with the other guests. But then again, who is going to step up and tell Jay-Z and Beyoncé what they can and can’t do?
