The Mufasa: The Lion King premiere came at a shaky time for the Carter-Knowles family. Jay-Z is facing allegations unlike any he’s experienced in his 30-year entertainment career. At a time when the rapper likely wanted to show support for his wife and oldest daughter, Blue Ivy, he had to grin and bear it on the Mufasa red carpet. Post-premiere, Beyoncé shared a supportive message to Blue on Instagram. Is she trying to bolster her daughter’s confidence as they weather the pending lawsuit?

Why was Blue Ivy Carter on the red carpet for Disney’s prequel to the iconic The Lion King? The 12-year-old played a special behind-the-scenes role in Mufasa: The Lion King. She voices Princess Kiara, the oldest daughter of Queen Nala. The film explores Mufasa’s origin story, chronicling his rise from a humble orphan to the proud king of Pride Rock. With rich storytelling and stunning visuals, Mufasa deepens the legacy of the 1994 classic.

In addition to Blue’s role as Kiara in Mufasa, Beyoncé reprises her role as Nala after first lending her voice in 2019’s musical drama The Lion King. As the mother and daughter kicked off their media tour, a lawsuit surfaced. It accuses Jay-Z of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl with Sean “Diddy” Combs at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty. Filed by Jane Doe, the lawsuit alleges that both men drugged and raped the minor.

Jay-Z has denied the allegations, describing them as false and defamatory. His legal team has criticized the claims. They believe it’s an attempt to extort money. In a statement from his entertainment company, Roc Nation, the “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” rapper said he must “mourn yet another loss of innocence,” reports AP News. His statement implied that he and Beyoncé had to address the claims with Blue Ivy and her younger brother and sister, 7-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir.

Rather than address the scandal during the premiere, Beyoncé and Jay-Z celebrated their daughter’s contributions. The former Destiny’s Child frontwoman took to Instagram after the Los Angeles premiere on December 9. She shared two photos of Blue in her gorgeous gold gown with the caption, “My gorgeous baby girl. This is your night. You worked hard and you did such a beautiful job as the voice of Kiara. Your family could not be prouder. Keep shining.”
