The Cookout made history during ‘Big Brother 23’

Following the footsteps of Da’Vonne Rogers last season, who brought attention to the lack of Black players who experienced success in the game, six Big Brother contestants Derek Frazier, Tiffany Mitchell, Xavier Prather, Azah Awasum, Kyland Young, and Hannah Chaddha, formed The Cookout.

The group had a mission of working together with the hopes of one of them becoming the first Black houseguest to win the original series.

To help the alliance get as far as possible, Tiffany implemented a “plus one” plan that required the members to openly team up with someone, not in the alliance. Therefore, a Head of Household winner would nominate them both, giving the group the numbers to save their ally.

Additionally, it hid the large six-person team. It worked, and they made it to the final six, becoming the first alliance to advance all its members to the end.

Xavier Prather walked away with the win

By the time they reached the end, The Cookout had divided into Tiffany and Xavier’s side. Kyland, who served as the swing at the time, sided with the latter, taking the first shot at Tiffany.

After unanimously joining the jury house during the opening half of the second Double Eviction, her closest ally Hannah followed her out shortly later.

Xavier then secured the next HOH and Power of Veto and took the opportunity to target his biggest competition remaining, Kyland. The move left him in a great position as he sat in the final three with two houseguests most loyal to him.

However, it didn’t matter as Xavier won the final HOH, taking his fate into his own hands. He chose to sit next to Derek, his Week 1 ally and received every vote to win.

How much money all the ‘Big Brother 23’ houseguests earned

The show’s winner received a historic $750,000 cash prize, increased by a quarter million from the previous seasons. Additionally, the runner-up, Derek, took home $75,000, also upped from prior years. However, he walked away with $82,500, including the $7,500 he won in a POV competition.

On top of already receiving the $1,000 stipend a week for those who made it to the jury phase, giving them a total of $14,000, Tiffany earned an unprecedented $50,000 for winning America’s Favorite Player. Therefore, she went home with $64,000.

Reportedly, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers also walked away with more money. Azah, who placed third, received $10,000 more, earning a total of $24,000. The fourth-place finisher gets $7,500 more, resulting in Kyland taking home $21,500. Hannah entered the jury in 5th place, earning an extra $5,000, for a total of $19,000.

Although Sarah Beth Steagall was voted out a couple of weeks before her, she took home the same amount as she won $5,000 in a POV competition. Finally, Britni D’Angelo, Derek Xiao, Claire Rehfuss, and Alyssa Lopez walked away with $14,000. Big Brother 23 is available to stream on Paramount+.
