Machine Gun Kelly says ‘I wrote this song for my wife’ before performing ‘Twin Flame’

On Sunday, May 16, the Billboard Music Awards lit up Las Vegas, NV with performances from today’s biggest stars. Silk Sonic, Megan Thee Stallion, Dan + Shay, and Travis Scott performed but the most emotional moment of the broadcast came when Machine Gun Kelly took the stage.

Sitting alone with only his guitar and a microphone, the singer bared his soul for the audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Before launching into “Twin Flame,” a shaking Machine Gun Kelly said, “I wrote this song for my wife.”

The 32-year-old became engaged to 37-year-old Fox in Jan. 2022. They reportedly started dating in 2020. The lyrics to “Twin Flame” reference an early conversation the singer had with Fox where she called him her twin flame.

On the Give Them Lala…with Randall podcast, Fox said, ”Instead of a soul mate, a twin flame is actually where a soul has ascended into a high enough level that it can be split into two different bodies at the same time. So we’re actually two halves of the same soul, I think. And I said that to him almost immediately, because I felt it right away.”

At the end of the first chorus, he said “Happy Birthday my love.”

If the first part of Machine Gun Kelly’s “Twin Flame” performance felt like an intimate love song, the second part felt like unspeakable heartbreak. He stood up, walked to the microphone stand, and said, “and this is for our unborn child.”

The internet quickly started speculating Fox is currently pregnant, but the lyrics paint a sadder image that likely points to a loss. The second part of “Twin Flame” started with the lyrics, “In this film I know/ There’s no happy endings.”

He then sang, “Go to sleep/ I’ll see you in my dreams/ This changes everything/ Now I have to set you free.”

On the red carpet, Fox said she would try her best not to cry during her fiance’s performance

Megan Fox joyfully posed with her fiance and answered questions alongside him on the red carpet on Sunday night. However, she alluded to a secret meaning in “Twin Flame” that could cause her to become emotional during her fiance’s performance.

When speaking to ET the rock star revealed he played the song for Fox, when he first wrote it. She shared, “There’s like super special secret meaning to the song as well. So I’m sure I will be emotional, but I can’t cry and f*** up this eyeliner.”

On Sunday night, Machine Gun Kelly tweeted about the performance. He wrote, “broke my heart to sing the end of that song.” A few minutes later he added in a second tweet, “I recorded twin flame 2 years ago today, the second half came a year later. beautifully serendipitous getting to sing it for you tonight.”
