Blake Shelton Reveals Why Adam Levine Wasn’t Invited to His and Gwen Stefani’s Wedding
After dating for over five years, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani finally tied the knot in summer 2021. Being a celebrity wedding, knowing who did and did not get on the guest list for the big day became a point of speculation for fans. The main subject of this curiosity was Adam Levine. The Maroon 5 frontman was a fellow coach on The Voice with the couple before leaving in 2019. That amount of time together could make the trio close enough that Levine would be in the crowd when they said their vows — but he was not invited to the wedding at all. Considering some of his quotes leading up to the event, it’s easy to see why he got left out. Keep reading to learn more about why Adam Levine wasn’t invited to Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s wedding, according to Shelton himself.
Levine might’ve talked his way out of Stefani and Shelton’s wedding
In April 2021, Levine made an appearance on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres asked him plainly if he would sing at the wedding, to which Levine said, “I don’t support their marriage.” His objection came from the simple fact that, “she’s so cool, and he’s not.”
Levine’s jokey defensiveness likely comes in response to an interview Stefani gave on Late Night with Seth Meyers, during which she revealed that she and Shelton were not planning on having a wedding singer at all. “I feel like we’re just [going to] go with a playlist,” she told Meyers. “We’re keeping it very simple — really simple.”
But this is all just ribbing between friends. Levine conceded that Shelton is “vaguely charming” and that he missed being around him more often so that he can make fun of him — although he then announced plans to crash the wedding.
“I’ll go to the wedding, and I’ll object,” he joked. “I will probably not be invited, now that I’m saying this on live television, but I’ll be there, somehow.”

Even in this age of misinformation, words have consequences. Shelton did his own interview with DeGeneres on Dec. 6, 2021, and made it clear that Levine’s quotes did him no favors.
“That’s the reason we didn’t invite him to the wedding,” he said to the laughter of the studio audience. Shelton was then asked if he and Stefani may have reconsidered if Levine never said what he said. Shelton teased the crowd with a smirking, “We’ll never know.”
He tripled-down on the joke by saying, “I purposely did not invite Adam Levine to my wedding — and I think it’s funny.”
Shelton and Stefani’s wedding was a low-key, but emotional affair
Shelton and Stefani’s wedding took place on July 3, 2021, on the former’s ranch in Oklahoma. (The news was first broken by Page Six.) The ceremony was a declaration of their love and an acknowledgment of the journey the two went on to get to this point. Both of them have been through a divorce — Shelton has two ex-wives — and the shared experience helped to create their initial bond.
“That’s kind of how our friendship and bond started, that day,” he told Billboard in 2016. “It went from that, to checking in on each other once a week through email — ‘This sh-t happened to me, what happened to you?’ — to maybe three times a week, then every day, to, ‘Hey, here’s my phone number if you ever want to text.’ Next thing I know, I wake up and she’s all I care about, and I’m wondering if she feels the same about me.”
Levine wasn’t the only big name who didn’t get an invite, for the record. The wedding was kept small and focused on family. Reportedly, there were only 40 people in attendance, including Stefani’s parents and her three sons from her previous marriage to musician Gavin Rossdale.
Meanwhile, Levine spent the weekend with his wife and children in Miami, but there was still some extra representation from The Voice; Carson Daly, the show’s host, officiated the wedding.
