Blake Shelton Says Gwen Stefani Believed Their Relationship Would Not Last Because of Her Sons

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are a power couple in music. He is a country superstar, while she is a queen of pop.

The two of them got married in 2021, but Shelton recently shared that Stefani had some doubts about their relationship in the beginning. He revealed her three sons were the reason for this.

Shelton and Stefani met in 2014 when they both were coaches on The Voice. The pair developed a friendship, especially because their respective marriages were breaking down at that time.

Stefani told Extra in 2016, “It was like being handed this gift of a friend who was going through the exact same thing at the exact same time. […] And then everything flipped. It went from horrible to, like, hopeful and, like, ‘Wow, God, you just don’t know what’s gonna happen next.’”

In 2015, both Shelton and Stefani announced they were divorcing their spouses. Later that year, they went public with their relationship.

Although Shelton and Stefani have been able to develop a great relationship, the country singer recently shared that, in the beginning, Stefani did not believe they could last. This is because Stefani was coming into the relationship with three kids of her own–all from her marriage to Gavin Rossdale.

“I think Gwen thought, when we first started seeing each other, that it was just gonna be a moment in time because of that,” Shelton said (via People).

However, Shelton embraced Stefani and her sons, especially because of the example set by his own father. Shelton’s father married his mother when she already had a child, who is Shelton’s older brother Richie.

Shelton said of his father, “He took Richie on and raised him from the time he was 1 year old, and my brother never thought of my dad as anything other than his dad. The example that my dad set for me was that [child] was not even a consideration [in a romantic partnership]. You got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it. My dad raised me. I could do this.”

“I didn’t know what I was signing up for, but I was all about signing up for it,” he continued. “And every day I’ve fallen in love with the boys as much as I do with Gwen.”

Shelton is from Oklahoma, and he currently has a 1,300-acre ranch there. Stefani and her boys have mostly been raised in California, and Shelton has introduced them to the country lifestyle of his home state.

Shelton recalled that Stefani’s sons initially didn’t know what to do at the ranch: “The two of them were like, ‘Well, what do we do now?’ I go, ‘Go out that door and don’t come back till you’re too tired to go any further.’ Well, they can’t even imagine just going down to the creek with a net or turning over rocks or getting on a buggy and driving around.”

According to Shelton, they are now able to enjoy life at the ranch and even see it as similar to “Disneyland.”
