Blake Shelton experienced true parenthood for the first time when he became a stepfather to his wife Gwen Stefani’s children. But the country star surprised himself when he realized he first felt like a parent doing The Voice.

When Shelton married Stefani, he also became a stepfather to three children the “Hollaback” singer shared with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale. In the past, Shelton has been very candid about what becoming a stepfather meant to him. Not too long ago, the singer asserted that he couldn’t help but be changed by the experience. So much so that they were even partially the reason why Shelton stopped hosting The Voice.

“I think being a stepdad has changed my perspective in that I’m not the first person that I think about anymore,” Shelton said in a 2023 interview with Access. “Even to the small little things when you go, ‘I think I’ll do this,’ the very next thought is always, ‘Well, wait a minute. How’s that going work?’ Or, ‘What will they think?’ Or, ‘How will that affect a schedule?'”

Shelton believed the only way to fully commit to his newfound parenting duties was to leave The Voice.

“There’s no way around it. If you’re going to do it and do it right, you have to be 150 percent in. And I just feel like those days are behind me for now. I got a more important job,” he added.

But long before Shelton decided to leave The Voice, the reality show initially helped him get in further touch with his fatherly side.

“I never thought in a million years when I signed on to do that show that I would ever be so defensive when it comes to reading a blog or critique about one of my artists,” he once told ET. “[In the] first season or two, I couldn’t help it. I would just lose my mind when I would see someone picking on a kid, you know.”

A source once claimed that Blake Shelton was ready to become a biological father

A source alleged that becoming a stepfather to Stefani’s kids also made Shelton realize that he was ready to have biological children.

“Gwen would love nothing more than to give Blake his first child,” the source claimed. “Blake is dying to be a father. He loves Gwen’s kids, [which has] made him realize he could be a good father.”

The source shared that having another child was Shelton’s and Stefani’s top priority. Neither Shelton nor Stefani denied or confirmed these rumors. But Shelton has been very candid about how much he enjoys being with his and Stefani’s kids. This could possibly explain why Shelton might’ve been excited about expanding his own family.

“It’s been a lot of fun for me to be the one to get to expose them to this — out in the country,” Shelton said. “They love it so much, her entire family. And when I say her family, I mean all of them. I’m talking about the kids, the mom, the dad, the brother. There’s times when we’ve had holiday gatherings, and I’m talking about 30-plus family members from her side, from my side.”

He quipped that he and his family perhaps enjoy themselves too much.

“I don’t think you should be able to have that much fun. It’s probably not legal in California,” Shelton said.

Recently, Stefani and Shelton celebrated their eldest son, Kingston Rossdale, turning 18. In a separate interview with ET, Shelton reflected on the years he’s spent with his new family. And how surprised he is by how quickly time passed by.

“If I could have a repeat of these past 10 years, [that] would be perfect,” Shelton said earlier this year. “Next month, we’ve got an 18-year-old, which it blows my mind that already happened. And in a couple of years, we’ll have another 18-year-old. And that’s… it’s gonna be I guess a lot more alone time, which I’m not mad about that either.”
