Blue Bloods might not be done yet. An extension of the popular CBS series might be in the works, a Paramount exec recently hinted.

CBS is considering ‘franchise extension’ for ‘Blue Bloods’

The big Blue Bloods news came during a meeting for Paramount shareholders on June 4.

“We are building tomorrow’s billion-dollar brands right now,” Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins said. “In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for Dexter, Billions, and Blue Bloods, and CBS’ hit Fire Country shows huge promise.”

CBS has already announced that a Fire Country spinoff, titled Sheriff Country, will debut during the 2025-26 broadcast season, while a Dexter prequel is moving forward at Showtime. Billions spinoffs are also in development, sources told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. But this is the first time a spinoff of Blue Bloods has been mentioned.

As of now, there are no further details about what a Blue Bloods spinoff might look like. Possibilities include a prequel series featuring younger versions of familiar characters, a show focused on the next generation of the Reagan family, or a series about a new family of cops. It’s also not clear if a Blue Bloods extension would air on CBS or be a streaming-only offering, similar to Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Tom Selleck wants CBS to un-cancel ‘Blue Bloods’

The news that Blue Bloods might continue in some form comes not long after series star Tom Selleck expressed confusion over CBS’ decision to cancel the cop drama after 14 seasons

“Well, that’s a good questions, the actor told CBS Sunday Morning when asked if the show really was ending. “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses.”

“We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” Selleck went on to say. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!”

The Magnum P.I. previously speculated that loyal Blue Bloods fans would not be happy to bid farewell to the Reagan family.

“CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it,” he told TV Insider ahead of the season 14 premiere. “The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [numbers] will increase with the interest this year. We’re certainly not out of ideas.”

‘Blue Bloods’ will end later in 2024

While Selleck expressed enthusiasm for continuing to star as Frank Reagan, CBS has previously said it haas no intention of reversing the show’s cancellation

“We really want to thank the cast and crew, everyone involved in the show,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said during a press conference on May 2, Deadline reported. “We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give the show the sendoff it deserves.”

“We love this cast, we love their passion for the show,” she added. “All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December.”

Blue Bloods is streaming on Paramount+. Season 14 Part 2 will premiere in fall 2024 on CBS.
