‘BMF’: Is Lamar Based on a Real Person?
Starz’s latest drama series, BMF has been a passion project of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson‘s for quite some time. Hip-hop fans know of the infamous Flenory brothers and how they formed their cime organization into an entertainment company. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory (Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr.) and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory (Da’Vinchi) began their careers as small-time drug dealers in Detroit in the ’80s when they were just teens. From there they would become two of the biggest drug traffickers in the country.
Though their story is just getting started on BMF, they are already facing some major obstacles. But is their main rival Lamar (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) based on a real-life person?
How accurate is ‘BMF’?
With the Flenorys and their family on board for the series, created Randy Huggins and 50 Cent wanted to make sure that the show was as accurate as possible.
“I took some liberties, but everything there is based on a story,” Huggins told Urban Hollywood 411. “Obviously, you can’t have people’s names in there. Obviously, some of the places may have changed.”
Still, Huggins refused to stray too far away from the real life events. . “I don’t think there’s a character in there, that I hadn’t heard of,” he said. “I may have to take a creative liberty to make an art pop a little bit more. I may have to take a creative license to make a scene funnier than it may have been, but that’s just part of telling a story. This is not a documentary.”
Is Lamar based on a real-life person?
Out of everyone on BMF, Kofi-Abrefa’s Lamar is perhaps one of the most interesting characters to watch. An Omar-like character (from The Wire), Lamar clearly has an undiagonised mental illness and was released from a mental health ward amid the 50 Boyz’s rise in Detroit.
The character is in fact, based on real life people. Huggins used several people who circled the Flenorys world during the era to create a composite character. “It’s not just a drug show,” Huggins told TVLine. “We delve into mental illness with Lamar. Back in the 1980s, when [President] Reagan closed all those state-run mental health facilities, people like Lamar were released with nowhere else to go. He may have gone in the asylum thinking it was easier than prison, but he was probably already mentally ill and got worse.”
Did Lamar shoot Southwest T?
BMF fans were horrified at the end of the pilot when Terry was shot in the face while exiting his girlfriend’s home. He was rushed into emergency surgery, but the violent incident left him without any eyesight in one eye. Now fans are convinced that Lamar was the culprit behind the shooting.
As fans know, Lamar and his crew are at war with the Flenorys and the 50 Boyz. Lamar is also angered by the fact that Big Meech and Monique (Arkeisha “Kash Doll” Knight) were in a romantic relationship relationship while he was in prison and then in a mental wellness hospital.
Fans are convinced that he shot Southwest T because of the workman’s boots he often wears that were seen on the faceless shooter.
