The 2022 Academy Awards had several memorable moments, although the most controversial included a slap on live television. Stand-up comedian Rock introduced the nominees for a documentary feature, beginning the introduction with a few jokes. One punchline was directed at Jada Pinkett Smith, who recently shaved her head due to alopecia.

“Jada, I love ya, G. I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” Rock said, referencing Demi Moore in G.I. Jane. Smith then walked up to the stage and took a swing at Rock, with the Academy cutting the audio before Rock could say, “Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.”

“Keep my wife’s name out ya f****** mouth,” Smith yelled. The viewer reaction to this alternation has been somewhat split. Some fans commended Smith for defending his partner, while others condemned the violence.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ winner Bob the Drag Queen took a poll about the Will Smith and Chris Rock Academy Awards incident

As a comedian/drag performer herself, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen took to social media, creating a poll about whether or not Smith was “wrong.” With over 55,000 votes and 14 hours remaining in the survey, the opinion was split.

35.7% said yes, Smith was wrong for slapping Rock, 31% said no, and 33.3% voted for “it’s complicated.” Some Twitter users even commented their thoughts on the “physical assault” and if it was ok given the situation.

“I feel like all of the comedians are on one side of this, and everyone else is on the other. I really shocked at this reaction tbh,” Bob the Drag Queen noted in a separate tweet. The performer added, “Last question. Why is everyone so sure that Chris Rock knew about her condition?”
