Anyone desperate to see Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston rekindle their relationship was gifted a little bit of hope on Jan. 19 when the former flames came face-to-face at the SAG Awards. Both Aniston and Pitt left as winners, and their reunion, captured on film, made fans absolutely swoon. Everyone was so busy talking about Aniston and Pitt’s potential romance that they didn’t even notice that the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star threw a touch of shade at his second ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, during his acceptance speech. Let’s break down what happened.

Brad Pitt took home a SAG Award for his work on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The SAG Awards aired on Jan. 19, and several significant stars received awards. Aniston took home a trophy for her work on The Morning Show. It was her first win in 25 years at the guild-backed ceremony. Michelle Williams also went home a winner for her work in Fosse/Verdon and Peter Dinklage took home the statue for his time on Game of Thrones.

While there were a lot of big winners this year, all eyes seem to be turned to Pitt. Pitt was nominated in the Oustanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category for his work on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He was pitted against Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, who were both nominated for The Irishman, as well as Tom Hanks and Jamie Foxx. Hanks was nominated for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, while Foxx was nominated for his work on Just Mercy. Pitt came up victorious, and he was happy to take the stage to accept his trophy.

Brad’s speech threw a little bit of shade at Angelina Jolie

Pitt started off his acceptance speech by informing the crowd he’d need to add his latest award to his Tinder profile, letting everyone know he’s single and ready to mingle. The speech carried on with some pretty standard shout outs. He mentioned everyone he worked with on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and showed respect to the other nominees in his category.

After the shoutouts, came the quip that many believe was aimed at Jolie. Towards the end of the speech, Pitt says that the role he took on in the film was challenging. He claimed it was a stretch to play a character who got high, took his shirt off, and couldn’t get along with his wife. He shook his head briefly before getting serious again, insisting that the work that the members of SAG do each year is inspirational, according to The Daily Beast.

The dig might have been as much at himself as it was at Jolie, though. Pitt’s relationship with marijuana seems a bit complicated. He insisted he quit smoking after having children, but it appears he may have indulged more than a bit even after bringing children into the world. Vulture notes that Pitt’s weed habit may have played a role in Jolie’s decision to file for divorce.

So, was Pitt’s acceptance speech a dig at his former wife, or was it more of a jab at himself? It looks like it was probably a bit of both. Aniston, however, was there for it, and cameras caught her reaction.

Jennifer Aniston was there for it, too

Aniston and Pitt seemed to run into each other more than a few times during the SAG awards. She was also pictured listening intently as Pitt accepted his SAG Award, mere moments before her own moment in the sun. During his speech, Aniston seemed totally into what the father of six was saying, and she even nodded her head when he mentioned the role being a “stretch.”

While shippers would love to think Aniston and Pitt are somehow in cahoots, it’s very possible she was nodding along because she’s been “that wife” before, too. She just happens to be further removed from the joke than Jolie. Pitt famously suggested his marriage to Aniston was the reason behind his unhappiness during that period of his life. He later apologized for the statement. He did mention, however, that he spent a lot of his marriage to Aniston smoking and sitting on the couch, which seems oddly similar to his joke during his SAG Award acceptance speech.
