‘Brady Bunch’ Star Ann B. Davis Called This Actor the ‘Least Interesting’ of the 6 Brady Kids
The Brady Bunch catapulted six young actors to stardom in their roles of the blended Brady family. Playing Greg (Barry Williams), Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Peter (Christopher Knight), Jan (Eve Plumb), Bobby (Mike Lookinland), and Cindy (Susan Olsen), the young co-stars were on the series for five seasons.
Ann B. Davis portrayed Alice, the housekeeper and honorary member of the family. Working with the youthful cast members on a regular basis, she singled out one co-star as a bit lackluster when the show began.
How Ann B. Davis described ‘Peter Brady’ star
In a 2004 interview, Davis was asked about each child actor on the show. When Knight’s name was raised, The Brady Bunch alum noted how he’s changed over the years.
“He has turned out to be a very interesting young man,” Davis told the Television Academy Foundation of Knight. “At the beginning, he was the least interesting of the six, I think.”
Apparently, Knight would often have trouble with dialogue due to some hearing issues.
“You couldn’t give him line readings because he couldn’t hear you,” Davis recalled. “It wasn’t that he was deaf. [Director] John Rich tried to give him a line reading one time, and he wasn’t getting it. … so you couldn’t give him a line reading because he couldn’t reproduce it.”
‘Alice’ actor said Christopher Knight had a unique talent
Davis clearly changed her view of Knight over the years, where she commented on one particular gift he possessed.
“He had a quality, which he still has,” Davis said. “He can say things that are rather rude and make them look cute. They don’t come out smart. They come out cute, or clever, or witty. This is a great talent to have, and I’m sure he doesn’t know he does it, but I know he does it to this day.”
The Brady Bunch star revealed she had the opportunity to get together with Knight occasionally, where he matured quite well.
“He’s also gotten very good-looking. I see him every few years,” she remarked, adding, “He was kind of the clown type.”
Christopher Knight appreciated ‘The Brady Bunch’ legacy
Knight reunited with his “Brady” siblings in 2019, and talked about how he wanted to separate from Peter Brady at one point in his career.
“I was a young leading man and wanted to get beyond that,” he told the New York Post. “But at the same time I had the feeling I was being tethered to the show and it was going to create a burden in being considered a serious adult.”
Over time, Knight realized the impact the sitcom has had with varying demographics and was grateful to be a part of such an iconic show.
“It became this thing that I owe everything to … what it really has provided is this wholeness with this community that’s huge,” he explained. “I’m a member of everyone’s family and that engenders this great outpouring of brotherhood and love. … Regardless of whatever generation you are … it’s the same loop for everyone, regardless of their era. The Brady Bunch has never not been around.”
