Brian Wilson co-wrote some of The Beach Boys‘ songs with a DJ. He discussed what he thought of this DJ as a person. In addition, Wilson said one of the songs they co-wrote was about a car and a woman at the same time.

Why Brian Wilson co-wrote several songs with a DJ

During a 2013 interview with Rock Cellar Magazine, Wilson discussed one of his regular co-writers: Roger Christian. “He was disc jockey for the LA radio station KFWB,” Wilson recalled. “In late ’63 I met him at KFWB and he said, ‘Hey, I write lyrics about cars, can you add some music to them?’ And I said, ‘Yeah,’ so that’s how we started writing together and writing those cars songs.”

Subsequently, Wilson discussed his opinion of Christian. “He was a good guy to write songs with,” Wilson said. “He laughed a lot and made it fun for me. Some of the good ones we wrote together were ‘Shut Down’ and ‘Little Deuce Coupe.'” The other songs Wilson co-wrote with Christian include “The Beach Boys Medley,” “Spirit of America,” and Jan and Dean’s “Dead Man’s Curve.”

Brian Wilson said a Beach Boys song he wrote about a car came from his ‘heart and soul’

Dur8ng a 2011 interview with Goldmine, Wilson discussed The Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby.” “I wrote that with Roger Christian and it took me two days to write it,” he said. “I started out with the verse idea and then wrote the chorus.”

Wilson revealed his thoughts about “Don’t Worry Baby.” “It was a very simple and beautiful song,” he opined. “It’s a really heart and soul song, I really did feel that in my heart.”

Wilson added that “Don’t Worry Baby” has a dual meaning. “Some say it’s about a car and others say it’s about a girl, who’s right?” he said. “It’s both. It’s about a car and a woman.”
