Penelope Featherington loves Colin Bridgerton on ‘Bridgerton’
Penelope is a close friend of Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), so she’s often at the Bridgerton household. Season 1 showed her longing for Colin, who almost fell for her distant cousin, Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker).
Colin and Marina were engaged. But Penelope made sure that relationship ended by revealing Marina was pregnant with someone else’s baby as Lady Whistledown. The season ended with Colin deciding to leave London to travel. Penelope never told him how she truly felt about him.
It’s evident to the audience that Penelope loves Colin. But why doesn’t he notice her? The cast explained this dynamic.
Why Colin Bridgerton doesn’t notice Penelope Featherington’s feelings for him
The first season showed Penelope longing for Colin, who was completely unaware. The cast was asked why they thought the Bridgerton men were struggling to find themselves in a press conference. Colin and Penelope’s story was mentioned.
“The people that know you very well can see things that you can’t about yourself,” Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict Bridgerton said. “I think Colin’s like a perfect example in terms of the whole Penelope thing. It’s obvious to everyone else, and a lot of people are like, ‘Why can’t he just see?’ But the thing is, how many people do you know in life–that’s just life, right? You can’t see what everyone else can see.”
Newton also chimed in, talking about how losing their father at a young age affected them emotionally. “In terms of business and getting sh*t done, they’re quite good at that,” he said. “But in terms of emotionally seeing what’s in front of their face, particularly my character, it’s like something is right there, but you just can’t see it. And I guess that’s the same for all of the men in the show.”
Colin returns from traveling in season 2
Season 2 will focus on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey). But Colin will return to the family this season.
“For Colin after the scandal of last year, he’s returned to town with some interesting facial hair and a tan, which was nice,” Newton said. “And he’s sworn off women for the time being.”
“He’s kind of looking toward business pursuits and he kinda wants to find his place within the family,” he continued. “He feels like his brothers, as much as they’re very much not settled, he sees that they have ambition and drive and things they focus on in their lives. And he’s looking for his thing.”
Colin swearing off women could be a good or bad thing for Penelope. Fans will have to watch to find out. Bridgerton Season 2 is released on Netflix on March 25.
