Now that the eldest Bridgerton siblings — Anthony and Daphne — are happily married, Lady Whistledown is getting a love story of her own. And as teased by actor Nicola Coughlan, Bridgerton Season 3 will highlight Penelope and Colin’s romance.

The first two seasons of the Netflix show highlighted Daphne and Anthony’s romances

Bridgerton Season 1 introduces fans to the Bridgerton family and their adventures in Queen Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel) court during matchmaking season. As it highlights Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon’s (Rege-Jean Page) rivalry, friendship, courtship, and marriage, the Netflix series also explores the relationships between Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), Colin (Luke Newton), and Benedict (Luke Thompson).

The second season focuses on the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey). He hopes to marry Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran). But Anthony’s plans are sidetracked when he reluctantly falls in love with her older sister, Kate (Simone Ashley).

While Anthony and Kate sort out their romance, Penelope and Colin’s friendship grows. And as Eloise tracks Lady Whisteldown, she befriends and perhaps starts falling for a young activist named Theo (Callum Lynch).

‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 will focus on Colin and Penelope’s romance

Season 2 of Bridgerton ended with Anthony and Kate’s wedding. So season 3 will highlight a new relationship. And as teased by Coughlan, fans will finally get to see Penelope and Colin explore a budding romance.

“Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story,” Thea actor confirmed at an opening event for Netflix’s FYSEE Space via Deadline. “I have kept that secret since two weeks into season 2. This is the first time I am saying it here.”

The first two seasons of Bridgerton touched on Penelope and Colin’s childhood friendship. And they also revealed how strong Penelope’s unrequited feelings for Colin are.

But in the third season, Colin — who returns home from his world travels after being heartbroken by Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker) — starts to question himself. And in his self-reflection, Colin finally begins to see how much Penelope cares for him.

Season 3 of ‘Bridgerton’ diverges from the books

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels. The first two seasons follow Quinn’s first and second books, The Duke and I, and The Viscount Who Loved Me

But season 3 of the Netflix show will not follow the author’s third book. It will diverge from the timeline of source material and jump into Quinn’s fourth novel, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which centers on Penelope and Colin. Book 3, An Offer from a Gentleman, focuses on Benedict’s romance with a new character, Sophie Beckett.

With Coughlan teasing Penelope and Colin’s romance, fans can’t wait to see their love story unfold. But unfortunately, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for Bridgerton Season 3 yet.
