Brie Larson Making a YouTube Channel Was a ‘Power Move’ and It’s Paying Off
Brie Larson is no stranger to controversy. Her political views have caused fans of the Captain Marvel movie to consider a boycott. Most recently, the star decided to start her own YouTube channel to mixed reviews. While some fans love the idea and subscribed immediately, her haters were quick to question her intentions.
In the video, she explained why she decided to start her own channel. “This is the place to talk about things that are important and that matter. It doesn’t mean that there isn’t also silly content, that there’s ways for me to express myself personally, but there will also be deep conversations, anti-racist rhetoric, inclusive content.”
Standing up for her beliefs
Larson is outspoken about her political views and considers herself a feminist. She drew attention before the release of Captain Marvel when she claimed her press days were, “overwhelmingly white male” and that she “decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive.” This statement ruffled some feathers and caused a lot of negativity to be directed at Larson and her Captain Marvel character, Carol Danvers.
ScreenRant reports that following her comment there was backlash against her playing her Marvel character, claiming she wasn’t muscular enough for a superhero and that she should’ve smiled more.
Not one to back down, Larson reposted images on her Instagram story of Marvel characters with “manipulated smiles.” Luckily, the success of the film seemed to overshadow some of the controversies, and Larson is tapped to reprise her role in Captain Marvel 2.
Love her or hate her
With Brie Larson, it seems like you either love her or hate her, there is no in-between. She is an outspoken advocate for gender equality, working to end stereotypes both in front of the camera and behind it. Newsweek reports that her efforts in the 2018 “Time’s Up” movement have soured her relationship with some fans. They don’t like her involvement in it and have targeted her professionally in the hopes that she’ll fail.
But on the other side of the coin, many fans simply adore her and don’t understand all the controversy. One fan posted to Reddit, “She’s actively socially conscious, she seems excited about what she does, and she just seems generally kind. But when you’re looking for reasons to hate anything, including her, you’ll find them.”
Larson’s YouTube channel — power move?
With Larson starting her own YouTube channel, it’s easy to assume there will be some negative feedback. However, this platform could end up being a power play that rockets her to superstardom.
First of all, the channel has insight into her personal life. She tells of auditions she went on and roles she didn’t get. Larson also includes friends and family members on the channel. This glimpse into her life is a far cry from the glamorous red carpet and makes her more relatable.
She tells People, “For so long the internet perception of me has been through this carefully curated lens of a press day pegged to a specific project I am promoting. I’ve been hesitant to reveal too much about myself, partly out of fear of the unknown, but also because I had this idea that people wouldn’t be able to believe me as other characters. I see my channel as a way to break away from this line of thought and become more vulnerable and open about my flaws, what I am passionate about and who I actually am.”
Fans are flocking to subscribe to her channel, and it seems once they get to know her and witness her silly antics and glimpses into her personal life, they can’t get enough.
