Britney Spears Co-Wrote This Meghan Trainor Christmas Song
Britney Spears and Meghan Trainor make very different songs; however, Trainor once covered a classic track by the Princess of Pop. During an interview, Trainor revealed why she covered Spears’ Christmas song. She also discussed what she wanted to accomplish with her Christmas album.
Meghan Trainor recorded Christmas songs with her brothers’ help
During an interview with Billboard, Trainor discussed the origin of her album A Very Trainor Christmas. She crafted it with her brothers, Ryan and Justin Trainor, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “When quarantine hit and it was like month three, we were like, ‘OK, this is a sign. We’re gonna be here for a minute. Let’s do the album now while we’re stuck at home and not traveling,'”she said. “They recorded all of my stuff for me and wrote the songs with me.”
A Very Trainor Christmas includes both original songs and covers of Christmas standards. Trainor had a specific vision for the album. “I want to hear something new and fresh, like a pop Christmas,” she said. “At the same time, this isn’t pop. I can play this all year long. So that’s what we focused on with the originals.”
Why she decided to cover a Britney Spears Christmas song
A Very Trainor Christmas includes a cover of Spears’ “My Only Wish (This Year)” under the title “My Only Wish.” Spears didn’t write most of her famous songs. Despite this, Spears co-wrote “My Only Wish (This Year),” an uptempo Christmas song which is vaguely reminiscent of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.
During an interview with Lady Gunn, Trainor revealed who inspired her to record “My Only Wish (This Year).” “The Queen Britney herself!” she said. “That was one of my favorite Christmas songs growing up.”
Trainor had a strong reaction to the song when she initially heard it. “I remember the first time I heard it and fell in love,” she recalled. “I have always loved her version, and I wanted to try my own version. Nothing will ever be better than Britney’s!”
The way the world reacted to Britney Spears’ and Meghan Trainor’s versions of ‘My Only Wish (This Year)’
Although it was a single, Spears’ version of “My Only Wish (This Year)” did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The song appeared on the compilation album Platinum Christmas, which includes Christmas songs by Whitney Houston, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys, and others. The album spawned the sequels Platinum Christmas II and Platinum Christmas III.
Trainor’s cover of “My Own Wish (This Year)” did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 either. Despite this, A Very Trainor Christmas reached No. 89 on the Billboard 200, staying on the chart for five weeks. While “My Only Wish (This Year)” was not a hit, it remains an interesting connection between Spears and Trainor.
