Britney Spears and Judy Garland have been regarded by many to be LGBTQ icons for their music and for their support of the community. When Spears got married in 2022, she coincidentally tied the knot one day before what would have been Garland’s 100th birthday.

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari first started dating in 2016 after he appeared in her “Slumber Party” music video. The actor went on to appear in TV shows including Hacks and Dollface.
The two got engaged in 2021 as Spears was embroiled in her conservatorship battle. She testified in a Los Angeles court that June about how the conservatorship had ruined her life, and she was ready to move on.
The two finally tied the knot in June 2022 at a private ceremony attended by A-list stars including Drew Barrymore, Paris Hilton, and Selena Gomez.
“I am very ecstatic this day has come, and they are married,” a rep for Asghari said. “I know he wanted this for so long. He is so caring and supportive every step of the way. I am so grateful to have Sam in my life and can’t wait for the future they will build together.”

TMZ reported that Spears’ sons Preston and Jayden were not at the ceremony, as was their father, Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline. “Although the boys will not be in attendance, Kevin and the boys are happy for Britney and wish her and Sam all the best going forward,” Federline’s lawyer said.

News of Spears’ marriage broke the following day on June 10. The day marked what would have been Judy Garland’s 100th birthday. Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47.
Many noted the coincidence of the dates, considering Spears’ and Garland’s hallowed places in LGBTQ culture.

Both Spears and Garland were in the spotlight from an early age, and both notably dealt with issues as a result of their childhood fame. Spears’ conservatorship — which was terminated just a few weeks shy of her 40th birthday — kept her from making decision about her life for over a decade.
As a child star, meanwhile, Garland was infamously given pills to stay awake and act, and she faced addiction up until her death.
“They had us working days and nights on end. They’d give us pills to keep us on our feet long after we were exhausted. Then they’d take us to the studio hospital and knock us out with sleeping pills,” Garland said in her biography. “Then after four hours they’d wake us up and give us the pep pills again so we could work 72 hours in a row.”
