Over two decades later, “…Baby One More Time” remains one of Britney Spears’ most famous songs. During an interview, she said her vocals on the song were inspired by a 1980s one-hit wonder. The 1980s singer who inspired Spears later reacted to the news she drew inspiration from him.

Britney Spears said this 1980s one-hit wonder song is ‘sexy’

One of the most striking things about Spears’ songs is her vocals. Her voice is very distinct from her pop peers. Spears revealed her voice sounded the way it did on “…Baby One More Time” because she intentionally didn’t get much sleep the night before she recorded the track. She revealed what she thought of the vocal.

“I wanted my voice to be kind of rusty,” Spears told Rolling Stone. “I wanted my voice to just be able to groove with the track. So the night before, I stayed up really, really late, so when I went into the studio, I wasn’t rested.”

Spears thought there was something sexual about her voice on “…Baby One More Time.” “When I sang it, I was just laid back and mellow — it sounds cool, though,” she said. “You know, how it sounds really low in the lower register — it sounds really sexy. So I kept telling myself, ‘Britney, don’t get any rest.'” Spears mimicked the vocals from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” a song she felt was “sexy.”

Soft Cell’s Marc Almond reacted to inspiring Britney Spears’ ‘…Baby One More Time’

The lead singer of Soft Cell was Marc Almond. During an interview with Pehal News, Almond learned “Tainted Love” inspired “…Baby One More Time” and he was surprised. “Wow!” Almond said. “That’s wonderful. That is so cool. I like that.”

Almond didn’t think there was a huge chance of Spears taking influence from his music. “That’s improbable, that is unbelievable,” he opined. “That’s a beautiful factor. I’ve by no means, by no means realized that. Even now, I’m nonetheless discovering out issues.”

The way the world reacted to ‘Tainted Love’ and ‘…Baby One More Time’

“Tainted Love” and “Baby One More Time” both became hits — although one was considerably more popular than the other. “Tainted Love” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying on the cart for 43 weeks. Its parent album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, was a hit as well. It reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 41 weeks.

Its parent album, …Baby One More Time, was also a chart-topper, remaining on the Billboard 200 for 103 weeks. While “Tainted Love” was not as popular as “…Baby One More Time,” it certainly left a mark on Spears’ song.
