Bruce Springsteen Knew Jeremy Allen White Was the Right Person to Play Him in Biopic Because He ‘Had a Little Swagger’
Jeremy Allen White has The Boss’ seal of approval. The Bear actor is set to play Bruce Springsteen in an upcoming biopic, and the “Born to Run” singer is 100% behind the casting.
Bruce Springsteen says Jeremy Allen White is ‘the right guy’ to play him
White is currently filming Deliver Me From Nowhere, a movie based on Warren Zanes’ book about the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska. Photographers recently caught the 33-year-old Emmy-winner wearing a cap and leather jacket while on set in Montclair, New Jersey.
White’s challenge in the movie will be “depicting a very interior person,” Springsteen’s longtime manager Jon Landau told The Telegraph in a recent joint interview with him and Springsteen. (Succession star Jeremy Strong will play Landau in the movie.)
“There’s always a tremendous amount going on, some of which gets articulated, and some of which is held back,” Landau said.
But Springsteen himself is confident that White is up to the task.
“I only had to see him on The Bear, and I knew he was the right guy, because he had that interior life, but he also had a little swagger,” he said.
‘The Bear’ star says Springsteen is ‘really supportive’ of the movie
As for White, he’s been immersing himself in all things Springsteen in order to prepare for his role in Deliver Me From Nowhere, which is directed by Scott Cooper, who also directed Crazy Heart, Black Mass, and The Pale Blue Eye.
“I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing,” The Iron Claw actor told GQ. “I’m also really lucky [that] Bruce is really supportive of the film, and so I’ve had some access to him and he’s just the greatest guy.”
“Also, there’s just so much footage,” he added. “It’s really great to go down a YouTube rabbit hole and find him at all these different periods in his life and be able to listen to his speaking voice as well as his singing voice. That’s kind of been the deal, just listening to him a lot and watching him a lot. It’s been really fun preparing.”
White also pointed out that he and the “Born In the USA” singer have at least one thing in common: A no-fuss sense of style.
“Bruce Springsteen is — I mean this in the very best way — he’s a guy. He’s a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy,” he said. “It was exciting to know going into this thing that we had at least that in common.”
