BTS Are Nominated for Multiple 2021 Billboard Music Awards
The 2021 Billboard Music Awards will take place on May 23. Nominees for the awards show were announced on April 29, and BTS were nominated in four different categories. This is the most nominations the band has ever received for the Billboard Music Awards, showing the Korean band still has not reached its peak.
BTS earned four Billboard Music Award nominations
Billboard announced the finalists for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on April 29. BTS are nominated for Top Duo/Group along with AC/DC, AJR, Dan + Shay, and Maroon 5. The group is nominated for Top Song Sales Artist with Justin Bieber, Megan Thee Stallion, Morgan Wallen, and The Weeknd.
For the fifth year in a row, BTS are nominated for Top Social Artist. BLACKPINK, Ariana Grande, SB19, and SEVENTEEN are also nominated for the fan-voted award.
With their song “Dynamite,” BTS earned a nomination for Top Selling Song. The other nominees in the category are Gabby Barrett and Charlie Puth for “I Hope,” Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion with “WAP,” Megan Thee Stallion with “Savage,” and The Weeknd for “Blinding Lights.”
BTS have won five Billboard Music Awards
Before 2021, the most Billboard Music Awards the K-pop group had been nominated for at once was two. By being nominated for a total of four Billboard Music Awards at once for the 2021 awards show, BTS broke their previous record.
BTS have already won five Billboard Music Awards. Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook won Top Social Artist in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. At the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, the septet also won Top Duo/Group for the first time.
In 2019 and 2020, the band received nominations for both Top Social Artist and Top/Duo Group. They took home both prizes in 2019, while in 2020 they continued their reign as Top Social Artist.
The band will release a new song in May
On April 26, BTS announced that they will release a single called “Butter” on May 21. The band revealed the track title using a countdown livestream on the BANGTANTV YouTube channel.
The livestream began at 10 a.m. EDT, and for an hour BTS fans tuned in to watch an animated stick of butter melt. The song title “Butter” was revealed at the end of the livestream at 11 a.m. EDT.
“Butter” will be released on May 21 at midnight EDT and 1 p.m. KST. According to a press release, “‘Butter’ is a dance pop track brimming with the smooth yet charismatic charm of BTS. This song is the second English single following ‘Dynamite’ released in August last year.”
Leading up to the release date of “Butter,” multiple concept photos and video teasers will be released. The official music video for “Butter” will be released at the same time as the single on May 21.
With the Billboard Music Awards taking place just days after the release of “Butter,” it seems likely that BTS could use the awards show as their comeback stage.
