BTS Continue Their Record-Breaking Streak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 With ‘Butter’

BTS released their second English-language single 'Butter' on May 21. Since its debut, the song has spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard reported the new chart rankings on July 12, just days after BTS released a new English-language single called 'Permission to Dance.'

For the seventh week in a row, BTS have proved to be unstoppable with their new single “Butter.” The septet released the English-language song on May 21, and since it dropped it has remained steady at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The newest chart update comes just days after Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook released a CD of “Butter” along with a new single called “Permission to Dance.”

BTS’ song ‘Butter’ has spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100

In their career, BTS have had four No. 1 songs on the Hot 100: “Dynamite,” “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, “Life Goes On,” and “Butter.” “Dynamite” is BTS’ first English-language single and the band’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard chart. Before “Butter,” it was BTS’ most successful song on the chart and remained at No. 1 for three non-consecutive weeks.

“Butter” has long surpassed the accomplishments of “Dynamite” on the Hot 100, and it continued its reign for a seventh consecutive week.

According to Billboard, “‘Butter,’ released on HYBE/BigHit Music/Columbia Records, drew 29.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 6%) and 10.8 million U.S. streams (down 1%) and sold 108,800 (down 29%) in the week ending July 8, according to MRC Data.”

‘Butter’ reached the Pop Airplay top 10

In addition to spending seven weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Butter” also made waves with its impact on radio. For the first time since its release, “Butter” broke into the top 10 of the Pop Airplay chart.

Billboard reports, “‘Butter’ concurrently enters the Pop Airplay top 10 (11-10), becoming BTS’ second top 10 on the mainstream top 40 radio-based chart, after ‘Dynamite’ hit No. 5 last December. BTS is the first all-South Korean act with multiple Pop Airplay top 10s. One other artist from South Korea has reached the Pop Airplay top 10: soloist PSY, whose ‘Gangnam Style’ hit No. 10 in October 2012.”

BTS released a new song called ‘Permission to Dance’

July 9 is the anniversary of BTS’ fan base, ARMY. To give a gift to fans, BTS released a physical CD of “Butter” on the anniversary of ARMY receiving their fandom name. The CD includes four songs: “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” “Butter (Instrumental),” and “Permission to Dance (Instrumental).”

Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Johnny McDaid, and Jenna Andrews wrote the CD’s additional song, “Permission to Dance.” Mac, Stephen Kirk, and Andrews produced the song. At midnight EDT on July 9, BTS released a music video for the single.

The music video for “Permission to Dance” features multiple references to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With the song, BTS encourage listeners to grab happiness wherever they can.

“I wanna dance / The music’s got me going / Ain’t nothing that can stop how we move, yeah / Let’s break our plans / And live just like we’re golden / And roll in like we’re dancing fools,” the band sings in “Permission to Dance.”

BTS will perform “Permission to Dance” and “Butter” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 13 and July 14.
