The 2022 Billboard Music Awards occurred on May 15. BTS were nominated in six categories and won Top Duo/Group, Top Selling Song, and Top Song Sales Artist. While Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook were nominated for multiple awards at the 2022 BBMAs, BTS did not attend the award show in Las Vegas.

BTS did not attend the 2022 Billboard Music Awards

The 2022 BBMAs were held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 15. In years past, the members of BTS attended the award show whenever possible. Oftentimes, the septet would perform a new song at the BBMAs.

At the 2021 BBMAs, BTS virtually performed their song “Butter,” and they virtually performed their song “Dynamite” at the 2020 BBMAs.

This year, BTS did not attend in person or virtually. In a news report by Yonhap News Agency, the Korean media outlet confirmed ahead of time that Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook would not be attending the 2022 BBMAs.

While BTS’ attendance at the 2022 BBMAs was sorely missed, the band choosing not to attend the annual award show makes sense.

On June 10, BTS will release an anthology album called Proof, and it will be their first major album release since 2020. Because of this, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are in the midst of preparing for a new comeback.

Since BTS typically perform new material at the BBMAs and their new album does not drop until June 10, the septet did not have a new song to debut on the BBMAs stage.

BTS won three awards at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards

At the 2022 BBMAs, BTS were named as finalists for Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Artist, Top Selling Song, Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Song, and Top Rock Song. The band earned two nominations for Top Selling Song for their songs “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.”

All of BTS’ nominated categories were announced before the award show’s main broadcast in a TikTok stream. BTS won in three out of their six nominated categories. By winning Top Duo/Group, BTS earned their third win in the category and tied One Direction’s record of three Top Duo/Group wins at the BBMAs.

In addition to winning Top Duo/Group, BTS won Top Selling Song for “Butter” and Top Song Sales Artist.
