BTS released ‘Black Swan’ in 2020

Making the accomplishment even more impressive, “Black Swan” is still a relatively new song and the K-pop band released it on Jan. 17, 2020. The song was the first single released from BTS’s album Map of the Soul: 7.

When the song dropped on Jan. 17, an art film featuring MN Dance Company accompanied the release. The art film featured the classical version of “Black Swan,” and a studio version was released on streaming and music purchasing platforms.

An introspective track, it details the fear the band members feel about the day they can no longer perform their art as they vow to continue their passion.

“Ocean with all light silenced shut yeah yeah yeah / My wandering feet held in a rut yeah yeah yeah,” the group sings. “Every noise and sound’s been cut yeah yeah yeah / Killin’ me now / Killin’ me now / Do you hear me yeah.”

BTS broke Adele’s record with ‘Black Swan’

A few days after releasing the song, BTS performed “Black Swan” on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The group also released a music video for the studio version of “Black Swan” on March 4, 2020.

BTS beating Adele’s record can be added to the long list of accomplishments BTS achieved with Map of the Soul: 7. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the album’s lead single “ON” debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a career best for the band.

BTS’s new record could not have happened without the group’s fandom, ARMY. When fans realized that “Black Swan” was close to breaking Adele’s record with “Hello,” they encouraged each other on Twitter to try and break the record.

ARMY celebrated on social media

After “Black Swan” reached No. 1 on iTunes in 103 countries, BTS fans celebrated the fact the group broke Adele’s five-year-old record with a song that is just less than six months old.
