At the 2021 Grammy Awards, BTS received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Dynamite.” Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook also performed “Dynamite” at the awards show. On May 21, BTS released their second English-language single “Butter.” The song has spent nine non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the success of “Dynamite.” In an interview on SBS 8 News, Suga shared his hopes that BTS will have future opportunities to win a Grammy Award.
Suga wants BTS to have ‘another try’ at winning a Grammy Award
On July 24, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook appeared on SBS 8 News for an exclusive interview about “Butter” and their third English-language single, “Permission to Dance.”
In the group, Suga is frequently known for manifesting BTS’ goals by simply saying what he hopes the group will accomplish. Because of this, Suga is frequently asked about BTS’ Grammy hopes whenever the band is interviewed.
The interview with SBS 8 News proved to be no exception, and Suga was asked about the chance of BTS winning a Grammy Award one day.
“Of course I still wish to be nominated and give it another try. I really want to get it,” Suga said.
Suga and RM hope ‘Butter’ could win a Grammy Award
While BTS’ first English-language single “Dynamite” was a massive success, “Butter” has exceeded the song’s records on the Billboard Hot 100. After “Butter” was released on May 21, the members of BTS held a press conference to discuss the single.
Showbiz Cheat Sheet virtually attended the press conference. At one point, the members of BTS were asked if they released “Butter” to win a Grammy Award.
“We continue to want to receive a Grammy Award,” Suga shared. “‘Butter’ will be another try and I hope can have good results.”
RM added, “We are thinking of the Grammys. We will try to do whatever we can to set that as a goal and go towards that goal.”
BTS received their first nomination at the 2021 Grammy Awards
While some might think BTS became popular with no warning, the septet’s success has actually been quite gradual, particularly when it comes to the Grammy Awards. Every year, BTS move one step closer to taking home a trophy at the famous awards show.
After performing at award shows like the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards, BTS made their first Grammy Awards appearance in 2019. At the 2019 Grammy Awards, BTS became the first Korean act to present at the awards show after the members presented the award for Best R&B.
The next year at the 2020 Grammy Awards, BTS performed at the awards show for the first time. The septet took part in the “Old Town Road All-Stars” performance with Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X, Diplo, and Mason Ramsey. With the performance, BTS became the first Korean act to ever perform at the Grammy Awards.
BTS received their first nomination and performed a song of their own for the first time at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Korean band attended the awards show virtually, and the members’ performance of “Dynamite” proved to be a standout of the night.
With the success of “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” BTS will have multiple chances to be nominated at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
