Camilla Parker Bowles became a royal in 2005

Camilla officially joined the royal family in 2005 when she married Prince Charles.

Interestingly, Camilla and Charles dated in the early 1970s. However, at the time, both their families reportedly did not support marriage between them. Camilla went on to marry Andrew Parker Bowles, and Charles married Princess Diana. In the 1980s, Camilla and Charles started an affair together, which eventually led Camilla to be known as a royal mistress. They eventually divorced their respective spouses in the 1990s.

Camilla has not always been a popular royal, but over the years, she has shown her dedication to the royal family. She uses her royal role to promote organizations that help women and families, especially people who have been affected by abuse. As an avid reader, Camilla also helps promote literacy among children.

Camilla Parker Bowles reportedly does not care what royal titles she gets

When Camilla joined the royal family, she was given the title “Duchess of Cornwall.” Technically, Camilla is also entitled to use the feminine version of Charles’ “Prince of Wales” title, but she does not do so because it was used by Diana during her marriage.

“Following their marriage in 2005, Camilla takes on the title of Duchess of Cornwall which is actually her secondary title — legally she is Princess of Wales,” royal editor Victoria Howard said in the 2020 documentary Charles & Camilla: King and Queen in Waiting (via Express). “But Camilla knew how fond of Diana the public had been, it wasn’t going to wash with them that she would be the next Princess of Wales.”

Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter also added that Camilla is not pressed about royal titles: “She’s quite comfortable with it. Titles do not matter to Camilla. She doesn’t really care one Iota what she’s called — as long as she’s not called anything rude.”

Camilla will likely get another title in the future when Charles becomes king. As the wife of a king, she would become queen consort. Queen Elizabeth announced that she would support granting Camilla this title.

“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me,” Her Majesty said in a statement in February 2022. “And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.

However, some people do object to this. In fact, Camilla previously agreed to only be known as princess consort.

A spokesperson told The Times in 2020, “The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

It remains to be seen which title Camilla will officially get and how the public will react.
