Marvel‘s casting has been on point in nearly all of its projects. One of the best casting decisions the company made was when they cast Chris Evans in the role of Captain America, a.k.a. Steve Rogers.

Evans’ performance in each Marvel movie he’s appeared in has been nearly pitch-perfect. He’s made the character equal parts upstanding and ethical without ever seeming preachy or judgemental. In short, he’s been the perfect Captain America.

While his journey with Marvel seemingly came to an end in Avengers: Endgame, but new rumors have him returning to the MCU. Here’s why Marvel fans would love to see him come back for a time-traveling adventure.

Captain America’s journey in Avengers: Endgame

At the beginning of Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers are lost. Thanos is dead, having destroyed the Infinity Stones and fulfilled his mission. Five years into the future, the team figures out a way to go back in time.

We follow Steve as he travels to New York and then to a military base where he runs into the love of his life, Peggy Carter. At the end of the film, he reunites with Peggy in the 1940s and the two live a long and happy life together.

Of course, Steve and the rest of the Avengers’ mission in Endgame is to go back in time, collect the Infinity Stones, and undo Thanos’s snap. While they’re successful in doing so, the task of traveling back through time to return the Stones falls to Steve.

So where does Marvel go with Captain America from here? It’s clear that who wields the mantle and shield will be a big component of the upcoming series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The two main characters on that show, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, were two of Steve’s closest friends and confidants.

The Captain America legacy will no doubt continue to be explored there, tackling the modern definition of patriotism, servitude, and the idea of drawing hard moral lines in the sand.

As far as Evans as Captain America, that future is a bit murkier. While his narrative arc seemed 100% complete and wrapped up, Deadline reported that Evans is rumored to return to the MCU.

Having Evans return as a member of the new version of the Avengers would seem somewhat anticlimactic, undoing the dramatic stakes established in previous movies. But what if he’s not returning for roles that take place in the future, but instead participating in a look back at what’s already happened?

At the culmination of Endgame, Steve travels back in time to return the Stones. Moments later, he can be seen as an old man, clearly having chosen to live out his life with Peggy. This begs the question: how did his journey back into time go?

MCU fans took to Reddit to discuss how this would look, and one fan in particular thought it had the potential for a great film:

“what if it’s something bigger? He left with Thor’s Hammer, a handful of infinity gems, potentially Tony’s nanosuit that he handed to him at the beginning of Endgame (this one is admittedly a bit of a reach) and the ability to go anywhere in time. They could literally tell any story set in any time and have it take place between the time when he blips out and then comes back as an old man.”

The possibilities are endless. This could be a standalone Captain America film detailing his adventures traveling through time. Or it could suit itself well to a Disney+ limited series, with each episode taking him on a different adventure.
