‘Captain Marvel 2’: Will a Woman Direct the Movie?
In 2019, Captain Marvel joined the billion-dollar club by earning over $1 billion in ticket sales around the world. This made Anna Boden the first woman to direct a live-action movie that grossed $1 billion. Boden co-directed the movie with Ryan Fleck. Captain Marvel 2 is officially in the works, so will a woman direct the highly-anticipated sequel?
Megan McDonnell will write ‘Captain Marvel 2’
On Jan. 22, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Boden and Fleck would not return to write or direct Captain Marvel 2. According to the publication, McDonnell will write the screenplay instead.
McDonnell is currently a staff writer on the Marvel show WandaVision. The upcoming show will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2020. According to The Hollywood Reporter, McDonnell is in the final negotiation stages with Marvel to pen the script for Captain Marvel 2.
Marvel is searching for a female director
So far, there is no director attached to the movie. Boden and Fleck will not return to direct the sequel despite the movie crossing the $1 billion mark.
“Sources say that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the initial film hit, will not return to helm the sequel but are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series,” said The Hollywood Reporter.
With Boden and Fleck not returning, Marvel is searching for a new filmmaker to lead the upcoming movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the franchise hopes to find a female director to replace Boden and Fleck.
“Marvel is hoping to find a female filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2 and is eyeing a potential 2022 release,” reported The Hollywood Reporter.
In 2019, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, confirmed that having a female vision for Captain Marvel was important.
“Anna [Boden] and her directing partner, Ryan [Fleck], did an amazing job, and made the movie what it is, so yes, so we did believe it was very important that this story be told with a female voice behind the camera, many female voices behind the camera in this case,” he said.
Fans are excited for ‘Captain Marvel 2’
Captain Marvel currently holds a critic score of 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only was it the first live-action movie directed by a woman to surpass $1 billion worldwide, it was also the first female-led superhero film to join the billion-dollar club.
After the news broke that Captain Marvel 2 would have a female director and female writer, fans of the character and movie celebrated on social media. Fans seem confident that the sequel can become both a critical and financial success in 2022.
