Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford’s Affair Was Kept Secret From Mark Hamill Until Filming ‘Star Wars’ Ended for This 1 Reason
Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford had a 3-month long affair while filming the first Star Wars movie. However, co-star Mark Hamill didn’t know about the secret relationship until after filming ended. Here’s why everyone kept it a secret from the Luke Skywalker actor.
Carrie Fisher told the world about her affair with Harrison Ford in her 2016 memoir
When Carrie Fisher was only 19-years-old, and Harrison Ford was 33, the two shared a 3-month long romance. However, the world didn’t find out about it until the late actor released her memoir, The Princess Diarist, in 2016.
“A tiny part of me felt like I’d won the man lottery, and here I was both counting and spending the money,” Fisher wrote. “I looked over at Harrison. He was… God, he was just so handsome.”
The young woman recalls that she could “charm the birds out of everyone’s trees but his.” So, instead of talking to Ford, she would write in her diaries. She was an avid writer and continued the journals she began when she was 12. Fisher felt she couldn’t confide in anyone else but couldn’t talk to Ford, so the diaries were all she had.
After three months, Fisher realized that Ford wasn’t leaving his wife for her, so she ended things.
Mark Hamill didn’t find out about Fisher and Ford’s relationship until after filming
When filming ended for Star Wars, George Lucas’s wife, Marcia, informed Hamill of his co-stars’ affair.
“I’m glad I didn’t know before, as it probably really would have affected me,” Hamill told The Guardian. “By the time I found out, I just thought it was hilarious. But you know men – even if we don’t want to have a relationship, it’s just in our nature to jockey for affection.”
Marcia Lucas was also an editor on the original movie, so it’s possible she knew that it might have changed Hamill’s acting.
Hamill and Fisher had 1 make-out session but never pursued a relationship
It turns out that he was attracted to Fisher as well. However, he knew that it wouldn’t be a good idea to get involved with someone on set.
“But Carrie and I found pretexts,” Hamill recalls. “I remember one time – I’m sure alcohol was involved – we were talking about kissing techniques. I said: ‘Well, I think I’m a fairly good kisser. I like to let the women come to me rather than be aggressive.’ And she said: ‘What do you mean?’ Well, next thing you know, we’re making out like teenagers!”
However, they stopped what they were doing and began laughing. The co-stars never tried it again because Hamill believes they “got it out of their systems.”
Since this all happened while filming the same movie, it turns out that whoever kept the Fisher-Ford affair from Hamill knew what they were doing.
