After playing college basketball at UCLA, Jrue Holiday was selected in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played in the City of Brotherly Love for four seasons before he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent a few seasons there and then in 2020, was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. The guard was traded yet again in 2023 to the Boston Celtics.

Through all the changes in his career one woman has been by his side and she is a star in her own right with an incredible story. Here’s more about Jrue Holiday’s wife Lauren Holiday.

Lauren Holiday is a star in another sport

Jrue Holiday met then-Lauren Cheney in 2008 when they were both student athletes at UCLA. While Jrue played basketball for the Bruins, Lauren was a member of the women’s soccer team. She was an accomplished player over her four years at the school setting records for total points and game-winning goals. She also tied the record for goals and the second-most career assists.

In 2012, Jrue asked his college sweetheart to marry him and on July 7, 2013, they tied the knot at Cypress Sea Cove in Malibu, California.

Two years after they wed, Lauren retired from professional soccer. She had a celebrated career and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion.

Jrue praised his wife following her career saying: “She’s literally the athlete and the winner in our family.”

In 2023, Lauren was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Jrue took time off from basketball to care for his wife when she had brain surgery

In 2016, while she was six months pregnant with their first child, Lauren was diagnosed with a type of brain tumor known as a meningioma.

Upon hearing the news, Jrue announced that he would be sitting out at the beginning of the NBA season to care for his wife, telling NOLA.com: “My family comes before basketball. I’m obviously blessed to play this game and be in the position I am in, but my wife is the most important thing in the world to me. She comes before anything else.”

Doctors induced Lauren’s labor two months early so she could have the necessary brain surgery to remove the tumor.

After their daughter was born, Lauren reflected on her health challenges in an emotional Instagram about her baby girl.

“I can remember countless nights repeating ‘there may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning.’ I remember half believing it and half still in disbelief that this was my life,” she wrote, alongside a picture of Jrue Tyler. “I memorized scripture and some days my faith felt unshakable and others I was scared to death. Every time I see this smile I’m reminded that joy does come in the morning. Maybe not the next day, maybe not even the next month but it comes. I can’t imagine what heaven will be like if this is the joy I get to experience on earth.”

In 2020, Lauren and Jrue welcomed a son named Hendrix.
