Charli XCX Started Making Her First Album at 14 Years Old
It’s Charli, baby. Even before releasing True Romance and “You – Ha Ha Ha,” Charli XCX was recording original music. The “Used To Know Me” singer shared that she started writing her first album at just 14 years old.
Charli XCX is about to ‘Crash’
Some know her for the Vroom Vroom EP. Other listeners know her for the chart-topping release “I Love It,” recorded with Icona Pop — Charli XCX is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer.
Charli XCX created a unique space for herself in the pop music scene, curating the subgenre “hyper-pop” (even if she doesn’t like her sound being confined to one word). She has been releasing music for several years, partnering with Lizzo for “Blame It On Your Love” and Troye Sivan for “1999.”

She’s not afraid of giant nails or fake blood. Aside from her love of music, Charli XCX is known for her fashion moments, showcased on stage and even on the streets of New York City. Some of her outfits were explored in Amazon Music’s YouTube series The Walk In, hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race alumna Mo Heart.
After discussing some of the singer’s most iconic looks, Mo Heart asked some true and false questions. Charli XCX confirmed that she would wear a piano necktie and even shared that she wrote her first album at just 14 years old.
“Yeah, I did. I was making it at home, playing everything kind of badly and out of time,” Charli XCX said. “It’s on the internet. Don’t listen, but it’s out there.”
Mo Heart, obviously interested in the endeavor, asked for the project’s name. Charli XCX wouldn’t reveal its title, but she confirmed it is available for streaming somewhere. Even Pitchfork references the 2006 project as one Charli XCX considers “f****** terrible MySpace music.”
On Spotify, the earliest album available for streaming is True Romance, which the singer released and promoted when she was about 21 years old. This production features “You – Ha Ha Ha,” which became one of Charli XCX’s earliest hits. The song has since earned over 20 million Spotify plays.
