Chelsea Handler Admits She Doesn’t Want to Date Another Celebrity: ‘I Would Like a Real Person’
Chelsea Handler is entering a new phase of her career, as she works on developing and selling projects to streaming giants like HBO. Handler, a celebrity who is well known for her skills as a writer and stand-up comedian, first rose to fame in the early 2000s, with her fresh and funny late-night show.
At the peak of her fame, Handler walked away from her series, preferring to work on more serious projects. These days, with more fans than ever before, Handler is just as relevant as she was in 2007 — and she is once more open to love. Still, she has some ground rules in place, as she revealed in a recent interview with WIRED.
Chelsea Handler admitted she doesn’t want to date celebrities
In October 2020, Handler sat down with WIRED to answer some burning questions from fans. Since her dating life has always held a great deal of interest for fans of the outspoken, feisty comedian, one of those questions directly addressed Handler’s love life.
After responding by saying that she isn’t really dating anyone right now, Handler joked that her “sweet spot” is men between 60 and 80 years old, and admitted that her “ideal guy,” if she had to pick a celebrity, would be a “Jon Hamm type.”
Still, Handler explained that she’s “not really trying to date a celebrity,” stating that she “would like a real person.” Her admission that she’s over celebrities is interesting, considering that Handler has stepped out with one or two very big names.
Chelsea Handler has dated some big-name stars in the past
Handler’s first big relationship that was carried out in the public eye was with businessman and CEO of Comcast Entertainment Group, Ted Harbert. Handler and Harbert started dating in 2006 and went out for four years before splitting up in 2010.
Handler later admitted that her high-powered career contributed to their split: “I would come home from work, and Ted would be like, ‘Do you want to watch your show?’ and I’d be like, ‘No, I just came from my show. That’s the last thing I’d want to do.’ That was the reason it didn’t work out, ultimately. I think.”
After her breakup from Harbert, she stepped out briefly with Animal Planet star Dave Salmoni, before beginning a romance with rapper 50 Cent. While the two never directly confirmed that they were a couple, Handler has talked openly about her relationship with 50 Cent in recent years. She has even joked about getting back together with him from time to time — although nothing seems to have ever actually transpired between them since 2010.
What’s next for Chelsea Handler?
These days, it seems as though Handler has had enough of the spotlight — at least when it comes to her love life. Handler has worked hard to distance herself from the image that she cultivated during her years on Chelsea Lately when she talked about Kardashians and all the latest pop culture hot topics. She’s also had experience dating people in the entertainment business, and based on her comments to WIRED, she seems to be disillusioned enough by fame to want to pursue a relationship with a “real” person.
With recent revelations from the comedian that she wants to be more “open-minded” when it comes to dating, it looks like fans can expect to see Handler testing the waters with all different types of men in the coming years — just not those who share her celebrity status.
