How Cher Reacted to Taylor Swift Quoting Her in ‘You Need to Calm Down’ Music Video
Cher’s OK, happy even, with Taylor Swift quoting her in her music video for her new song, “You Need to Calm Down.”
Swift is known for hiding Easter eggs, or hidden messages, in her music videos for fans to find. But one part of the pop star’s music video for her new song wasn’t meant to be hidden.
In the first few moments of the “You Need to Calm Down” music video, Swift is seen sitting in a mobile home trailer and on the wall is a framed quote by none other than Cher.
“What’s the quote?” you ask. One of Cher’s most famous, if not the most famous, line she’s ever said.
The quote, “Mom, I am a rich man,” was surrounded by flowers. Framed in gold, the quote hangs on the wall and remains on camera for three seconds, appearing from the eight-second to 11-second mark. Watch the video for yourself to see the framed quote.
How Cher reacted to Taylor Swift quoting her in ‘You Need to Calm Down’ music video
Swift released her music video for her new song off her seventh studio album, Lover, in the early morning hours of Monday, June 17, 2019.
Later in the day, Cher, 73, took to Twitter to share with her 3.67 million followers that she had been referenced in Swift’s video.
First, she posted a still of the framed quote from the music video with no caption.
Then, a few minutes later, she tweeted a snapshot of a headline that explained Cher’s quote was one of Swift’s Easter eggs in the music video. Again, nothing direct from Cher.
Less than a half hour after Cher tweeted about the quote, Swift reacted on Twitter.
She replied to Cher’s original tweet about the quote, saying, “When you have a song about being calm and the video has a Cher quote in it and she posts it so henceforth you are not able to be calm anymore.”
Later in the evening, Cher tweeted about the origin of her famous quote.
She tweeted:
“Mom Wanted Me 2 Calm
Down,Stop Working Hard,&
One Day,(4 Some UNKNOWN REASON)She Said,”You Should Settle Down & Marry a RICH MAN”.WITHOUT THINKING I SAID,”MOM,I AM A RICH MAN”.
It’s Wasn’t About RICH or MAN,
It Was About”EQUALITY.
MANY MEN R AFRAID OF EQUALITY, [fist bump emoji] ESPECIALLY GOP.”
The origin of Cher’s ‘Mom, I am a rich man’ quote
During a 1996 interview with Jane Pauley, Cher’s asked about a remark she once made: “A man is not a necessity, a man is a luxury.”
Cher responded, saying, “Like dessert, yeah. A man is absolutely not a necessity.”
“Did you mean that to sound mean and bitter?” Pauley asked.
“Not at all! I adore dessert! I adore men! I think men are the coolest. But you don’t need them to live,” Cher said.
Then came Cher’s now iconic line.
“My mom said to me: ‘One day you should settle down and marry a rich man.’ I said, ‘Mom, I am a rich man.’’
She also added, “My experience with men is great because I pick them because I like them. I don’t need them.”
