Is Matt Casey coming back to ‘Chicago Fire’? Jesse Spencer is reappearing in the ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10 finale
The Chicago Fire Season 10 finale will feature fan-favorite cast member Jesse Spencer back as Matt Casey. Matt Casey left Chicago Fire earlier in the season to care for the late Andy Darden’s kids in Oregon. The commitment to caring for the kids meant Casey had to leave Chicago for good — thus, fans didn’t expect to see him return.
Now, he’s coming back for Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd’s wedding. Showrunner Derek Haas told Variety that they asked Spencer to join the episode because of the wedding aspect. Casey was always meant to be Severide’s best man.
“Basically, we went to Jesse a month ago or so,” Haas said. “We officially said, ‘Severide’s getting married and there’s no way that Severide can get married without his best friend and his best man at the wedding. So whatever we need to say to get you to come with us, please.’ Jesse is the greatest and we were thrilled he agreed to do it.”
Where have fans seen Matt Casey actor Jesse Spencer before?
Before fans knew Jesse Spencer as Matt Casey in Chicago Fire, where have viewers seen him before?
The actor is well-known for his role as Dr. Robert Chase in the hit medical drama House. He played Chase from 2004 to 2012, and he then jumped on to Chicago Fire in 2012.
Spencer has done various interviews about his time on House. The part of Chase was originally set for a 35-year-old, and Spencer was just 24 at the time. An interview posted by The Paley Center for Media shows him explaining how his agent urged him to go to test for the pilot episode anyway. After passing the test with flying colors, he flew himself out for an in-person audition. The rest is history.
Prior to House, he played Bill Kennedy in the TV series Neighbours, according to IMDb. Spencer was on the show from 1995 to 2005.
What’s next for the actor?
If Jesse Spencer doesn’t return to Chicago Fire for good, what does he plan to do next? According to IMDb, he has a role in a TV series titled Last Days of the Space Age. The show is currently in preproduction. The IMDb page states it’s an “eight-part dramedy series set in 1979 Western Australia when Perth was at the center of the world’s headlines.”
Aside from this new show, it seems Spencer left Chicago Fire primarily to spend time with family and keep his creative options open. “It was a difficult decision because I’ve loved this show from the start, but there are other things that I would love to do in the future and there’s some family that I need to take care of,” he told Us Weekly. “Eighteen years is a long time. That’s a long stretch.”
