Dr. Ethan Choi has had a difficult time on Chicago Med Season 7 so far. Choi returned in episode 7 after getting shot and nearly killed at the end of season 6. In episode 8, Choi injured himself in a way that will set back his healing process. It’s likely that actor Brian Tee won’t be in every episode of Chicago Med Season 7 going forward, but will we see him in the fall finale?

Dr. Ethan Choi is stil recovering in season 7

In the finale of Chicago Med Season 6, a deranged patient wielding a gun approached Choi and Dr. Dean Archer in the parking lot. Choi managed to get the gun away from the man, but not without first being shot in the chest. Luckily, Choi survived the incident.

In Chicago Med Season 7 Episode 7, Choi returned to Gaffney Medical Center. He obviously still had some healing to do, considering he walked with a cane and wore a back brace. Then in episode 8, Choi attempted to help a patient using an old-school manual method that required him to take his back brace off.

Choi’s method was successful, but Dr. Crockett Marcel found him in excruciating pain afterward. An MRI reveals that Choi has multiple herniated lumbar disks. At the end of the episode, Choi tells Sharon Goodwin that he plans to undergo multi-level spinal fusion surgery. This will require at least two months of post-op rehab.

Will Dr. Ethan Choi return for the fall finale of ‘Chicago Med’ Season 7?

With this in mind, some fans are concerned that Tee might leave the show for good. Luckily, that won’t be the case. One Chicago Center reports that Tee signed a new contract with the show over the offseason.

However, it seems likely that Choi will be absent from more episodes of Chicago P.D. Season 7. Tee is busy with a new role in Amazon’s Expats, and Choi is set up to be in recovery for a while following his surgery.

Chicago Med will also have some time off the air. Episode 8 aired on Nov. 10, and episode 9, rumored to be the fall finale, isn’t scheduled until Dec. 8. After that, the show will go on a holiday break until 2022. So will fans get to see Choi one last time before the long hiatus?

Luckily it looks like they will. Tee is credited on IMDb as Dr. Ethan Choi in Chicago Med Season 7 Episode 9 titled “Secret Santa Has a Gift for You.” The title hints that this could also be a holiday-themed episode. Choi may say a last goodbye to Gaffney Medical Center before going on leave for his surgery, but at least fans will get to see him one more time.

When will ‘Chicago Med’ Season 7 return in 2022?

After the fall finale of Chicago Med Season 7, fans will have a while to wait before the series resumes. According to One Chicago Center, the series will pick back up after the holiday break “at the top of the new year.” This means a new episode of Chicago Med Season 7 could be on the air as early as Jan. 5, but fans will have to wait and see.

Chicago Med Season 7 airs at 8 p.m. EST on Wednesdays only on NBC.
