One of the fans’ favorite will-they-or-won’t-they couples on Chicago P.D. is Adam Ruzek (played by Patrick John Flueger) and Kim Burgess (played by Marina Squerciati).

Burgess and Ruzek, sometimes referred to by the couple name Burzek, have gone back and forth on whether they wanted to be in a relationship.

Last season, it seemed clear that they were going to be together, but then a terrible loss drove them apart again. But recently viewers have seen hints that this may be changing — and this time it may just be Burgess’ pain that brings her back to Ruzek.

A tragic miscarriage

Burgess and Ruzek have had their share of relationship ups and downs, but Season 7 was a whole new level. At the beginning of the season, Burgess discovered she was pregnant with Ruzek’s baby.

The couple, which had been unsure of having a future together, started becoming closer and looking forward to sharing parenting and maybe even more.

But then came an event that changed everything. TV Insider reports that Burgess had been placed on light duty because of her pregnancy. However, circumstances drew her away from her desk and to a location where a sex-trafficking ring was operating.

Burgess intended to wait for other officers to help, but she heard a girl screaming, and she made the decision to go in and try to save her.

That decision led to an attack, and Burgess was brutally beaten. Even worse, her injuries caused her to have a miscarriage.

She tried not to think about it — until she had to

Burgess was able to resume her job in Intelligence even though her injuries left her with excruciating pain. She pushed through the hurt, but coping with the physical suffering was far easier than facing her loss. As Squerciati explained, her character shut down, emotionally.

“I think it’s just a coping mechanism of not being able to process and also she’s not in a place where she can even share her thoughts and emotions with anyone. She just needs to be alone with them and sit with them. They’re just so painful.”

But according to Cinema Blend, avoiding her grief may have become impossible in Season 8. During a recent episode, called “Tender Age,” the storyline featured Burgess and Ruzek finding a little girl wandering around unsupervised. In their search for her parents, they discover they have been the victims of a terrible crime. Not only do they have to solve the crime, but the child’s predicament stirs something in Burgess.

“But over the course of the investigation, Burgess connects with the young girl; this stirs up some of her emotions connected to the miscarriage,” said showrunner Rick Eid. “It also stirs up her maternal instincts and desire to be a mother.”

Of course, this brings up another question: If Burgess is starting to think about motherhood, is Ruzek a part of that picture?

Drawn together by grief?

There’s no question that Burgess will have to deal with her loss if she’s going to move on. And it seems that this case gave her the opportunity to do just that. According to Meaww, after the crime was solved, Burgess let her guard down with Ruzek for a moment, telling him that she hadn’t been sure she would make a good mom.

But their time with the little girl showed her that she has the instincts to be a good parent as well as a good cop.

There have been hints in the past that Bruzek may be on their way to romance again. Perhaps this case has given her an opportunity to grapple with her grief. Hopefully, that will bring her healing, and it may even open a door for them to be closer.

After all, Ruzek was the person she chose to share her feelings with. Perhaps this will be the beginning of much more between them.
