‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 19 Recap: Kevin Atwater Faces His Lies
Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 19 shifted its focus back to Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins). Previously this season, Atwater was romantically involved with a woman named Celeste, who broke things off with him because he lied about being a police officer. Viewers got an update of Atwater’s status with Celeste this episode, while the Intelligence Unit dealt with a confusing and complicated case. Here’s everything you need to remember about last night’s episode of Chicago P.D.
Kevin Atwater is still hung up on Celeste in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 19
Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 19 opens with Atwater drinking at a bar. He offers to walk the bartender home and she accepts. However, Atwater refuses when she asks him to come upstairs. The bartender brushes it off, stating she can tell when a guy is “still hung up on someone else.”
The bartender isn’t wrong. Atwater calls Celeste and leaves her his “weekly” voicemail. It’s clear that she hasn’t been returning his calls, and Atwater is having trouble moving forward.
On his way home, Atwater comes across the scene of a home invasion, with police officers already trying to get inside. He enters the home, finding one man dead and a terrified woman hiding in the garage attic, sporting a gun shot wound. Atwater later visits the woman, named Raquel (Molly Burnett) in the hospital to hear what she knows about the attack.
This week’s case proves more complicated than the Intelligence Unit anticipated
At the hospital, Raquel informs Atwater that the perpetrators were two masked men. Shortly after, the Intelligence Unit learns of another robbery perpetrated by two offenders. The team learns that the victims are both members at the same private club, and this leads them to question a bartender named Joey. However, the bartender has a solid alibi.
Atwater and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) then get word of another robbery in progress as the Chicago P.D. episode progresses. One suspect manages to flee the scene and the other ends up dead. Halstead later realizes that all the victims recently used Raquel’s interior design company. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Atwater pick Raquel up from the airport and bring her in for questioning.
Atwater reveals that Raquel has several aliases and that she knows the man who is perpetrating all these burglaries — Sam Olin. The team has become suspicious that Raquel organized a hit on her husband to claim his money.
Atwater helps clear Raquel’s name and faces up to his own lies
Ruzek and Atwater find Axel, the man who makes Raquel her fake IDs. Shockingly, Axel reveals that Sam has been stalking and harassing Raquel since she was 15 years old. Raquel agrees to help Voight’s team set Sam up, but she panics at the last second. Luckily Atwater is able to apprehend Sam.
Things are complicated even further when Sam claims Raquel is the mastermind behind the burglaries. Atwater wants to believe Raquel and asks her if there is any proof of Sam’s abusive behavior. Raquel finally remembers that she kept all her old phones with 16 years worth of threatening messages from Sam. Atwater manages to find the phones and put Sam away in prison.
He says goodbye to Raquel, who plans to move and start fresh. She accepts responsibility for lying to all her friends, even though she had an understandable reason for doing it. This seems to give Atwater something to think about. At the end of the episode of Chicago P.D., Atwater leaves Celeste a final voicemail. He apologizes and says that he won’t try to call her again.
Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
