Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess have a long relationship history. The on-again, off-again couple has gone through pregnancy, an engagement, and multiple breakups since Chicago P.D. Season 1. Now, in Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 20, new issues are at the forefront.

Ruzek and Burgess made plans to move in together so they could both assist in raising Burgess’s daughter, Makayla. But Makayla’s kidnapping earlier in season 9 resulted in yet another rift between Ruzek and Burgess. The exes didn’t communicate well during the emergency, as they disagreed on how to find the child. Now that Makayla’s back home safe, there’s still emotional distance between Ruzek and Burgess.

In episode 19, Ruzek goes undercover to track down a drug dealer, and he rents out an old apartment as a result. He ultimately ends up abandoning his plans to stay with Burgess and Makayla full-time. Instead, he stays in the apartment he rented out as part of his drug-busting scheme.

Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess still have a long way to go before they can solidly co-parent Makayla under one roof. But Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 20 seemed to hint that the exes would make it work eventually.

Burgess tells Ruzek at the beginning of the episode that she still plans on renting out the three-bedroom apartment they looked at — but it’s just for her and Makayla. By the end of the episode, Ruzek has a better idea. He wants to purchase his father’s home and give it to Makayla and Burgess to live in full-time. Ruzek suggests the change of scenery would greatly benefit Makayla after her kidnapping, and he also verifies he doesn’t plan to live in the home with them.

“You can’t buy me a house,” Burgess tells Ruzek at first.

“Why not?” he answers. “I get it, we’re not perfect right now. I get that. But, why not this? Kim, she might remember. Either way, we can give her all the best memories in the world to protect her from that. We can give her that here, together. Why not?”

If Adam Ruzek really does buy Kim Burgess and Makayla his father’s house, then we’re willing to bet he moves in with them soon afterward, reigniting his romance with Burgess. Ruzek actor Patrick John Flueger also still has hope that Burgess and Ruzek are endgame.

“Will they? Won’t they? Well, they will, but not going to in the way that you think they’re going to,” Flueger told Us Weekly. “I think at the end of the day, they’ll end up together, but I don’t think it’s an easy road to get there.”

Whether the exes make another attempt at a romance or not, Flueger also noted Makayla and Burgess are “everything” to Ruzek. “That’s the be all, end all,” he added. “When I go and I read a script, when I read these stories, that’s all it is. It’s just them.”

Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
