‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 4 Promo Suggests Hank Voight Tells Jay Halstead Hailey Upton’s Secret
Fans continue to root for Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton on Chicago P.D. But their relationship continues to get more complicated in Chicago P.D. Season 9. At the end of season 8, Upton got caught up in a lie with Sergeant Hank Voight — and it could cost her her badge, her relationship, and her life if she comes clean. But the promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4 suggests Voight might tell Halstead everything.
‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 3 exposed more of Jay Halstead’s past
Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 3 delved more into who Jay Halstead really is aside from his relationship with Hailey Upton. Prior to the episode, Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer gave fans a clue as to what’s to come, too. “We haven’t done a lot about his military background in a while, but, in the beginning of the season, there’s a great episode where someone from Jay’s past who he served with in Afghanistan comes back,” the actor told One Chicago Center.
One Chicago Center notes the episode had viewers meeting a former comrade of Halstead’s — and we learned more about the war crimes Halstead dealt with in the past. Halstead crossed paths with his former military commander, Knox. Knox calls Halstead “Ricky,” which we later learn is short for “Ricochet.” Halstead earned the name for the way he would bounce bullets off surfaces to skillfully hit the target he was after.

While Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 3 delved deep into Jay Halstead, Hailey Upton was also front and center. Hank Voight tells Upton the FBI launched a formal investigation into finding Roy, the man she killed who also shot Kim Burgess. And it seems this may send her into a tailspin.
A Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4 promo shows the mental toll Roy’s death continues to take on Upton. The beginning of the promo shows Halstead helping her through a panic attack.
“She can’t eat, she’s not sleeping,” Halstead says in a voice over. “What is ripping her apart?”
Then, at the end of the promo, Voight appears to speak to Halstead privately. “I don’t think you know the woman you’re sleeping next to,” Voight says.
Will the truth about what happened to Roy finally come out? Of course, if Upton goes down, Voight will as well, as Voight got rid of Roy’s body once Upton shot him. Additionally, Voight advised Upton to continue to lie about Roy’s death.
Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s season 8 proposal might be in jeopardy
During the Chicago P.D. Season 8 finale, Hailey Upton proposes to Jay Halstead. And in Chicago P.D. Season 9, Halstead accepts the proposal. But what will happen to Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s relationship once the truth about Roy comes out?
“They very much deeply care for each other, and this whole thing is definitely going to affect their dynamic,” she explained,” Upton actor Tracy Spiridakos told TVLine.
While the couple may see some bumps in the road, Spiridakos mentioned to TVLine she believes they’re “in it for the long haul.”
“I don’t know of a wedding anytime soon, but I can see that happening at some point,” she added.
Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
