‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Fall Finale Spoilers: Showrunner Hints at ‘Consequences’ After Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton Elope
The Chicago P.D. Season 9 fall finale features more of Jay Halstead, Hailey Upton, and Hank Voight’s sticky position. Halstead and Upton officially got engaged at the beginning of season 9, but their relationship got complicated after Halstead learned Upton killed Roy Walton. Now, the Chicago P.D. Season 9 fall finale shows Halstead and Upton tying the knot — but the showrunner reveals there are still “consequences” to come.

The ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 fall finale shows Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton eloping
Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton had their ups and downs through the entirety of Chicago P.D. Season 9. When Upton first proposed to Halstead in the season finale of Chicago P.D. Season 8, she did so after killing Roy Walton and having Hank Voight assist with getting rid of the body. Halstead had no idea, of course — but he knew something was up. Then, in season 9, he continued to observe Upton acting strangely toward him. Finally, he learned the truth about Upton killing Walton from Voight.
In Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 9, Halstead had a choice to make. After FBI Agent North threatened to put Halstead and Upton away for good if Halstead didn’t assist with taking down Voight, Voight and Halstead made a plan. They used the FBI agent’s drug-addicted brother against him, resulting in Agent North backing down from the Walton case. Finally, at the end of the fall season finale, Halstead begged Upton to marry him as soon as possible.
“Marry me, now,” Halstead said to Upton. The two are then seen suddenly eloping and exchanging their vows at a courthouse. It doesn’t seem like either Halstead or Upton tell anyone else of their decision.

Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton clearly love each other, but their elopement in the Chicago P.D. Season 9 fall finale doesn’t seem like the right time for either of them to get married. When Upton first proposed to Halstead, she was frazzled by the Roy Walton killing. Then, directly after Halstead narrowly escapes a horrible position with the FBI, he decides he needs to tie the knot with Upton secretly and without warning. It seems both Halstead and Upton have self-destructive tendencies that may hurt their relationship in the long run.
Not only that, but showrunner Gwen Sigan talked to TVLine about Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 9. “This is one of those Chicago P.D. episodes with no good options,” she said. Sigan then noted there will be “consequences, the realities of what’s happened, the guilt, the instinct to make it all better.” Additionally, Halstead, Upton, and Voight will become “affected by the decisions they end up making, and certainly the fallout on the other side.”
When does ‘Chicago P.D.’ return after the fall season finale?
The Chicago P.D. Season 9 fall season finale aired on Dec. 8, 2021. Sadly, fans will have to keep waiting a few more weeks after Dec. 8 to find out what happens with Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s new, sudden, and secretive marriage. Chicago P.D. Season 9 is slated to return to NBC on Wednesdays at the start of January 2022.
Chicago Med Season 7 and Chicago Fire Season 10 also aired their fall season finales on Dec. 8, 2021. All three One Chicago shows will return in January 2022.
